Contingency Fire Crew provide sufficient cover for South Yorkshire fire & rescue service in the event of a strike by Fire Fighters. Whilst they respect the right of staff to undertake industrial action, there is a legal duty placed upon the Fire Authority to provide emergency cover to the public they serve.

Fire & Rescue Operative
Fire & Rescue Operatives will be required to staff fire appliances and attend emergency incidents. Training will be provided. Candidates are required to be of a good level of physical fitness which will be assessed during the recruitment process via a bleep test within which candidates are required to meet the level of 8.7.

Fire & Rescue Driver/Pump Operator
Driver/Pump Operators will be required to drive fire appliances and operate pumps and will be given suitable Emergency Response Driver Training. Applicants for this role will need to hold a current Class C LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) licence and have undertaken over 200 miles LGV driving. There is the potential for Driver Pump Operators to undertake wider training in operational areas following a fitness assessment however this will be voluntary and discussed at interview.

Contractual Information
Individuals will be employed on a zero hours contract and SYFR will not be obligated to provide individuals with any hours of work.
Pay: You will receive £13.40 per hour during any period of training or work undertaken.
Retention Fee: You will receive £200 for every 4-week period of availability you provide after completing your initial training. Please be aware that to receive the retention payment you must attend the relevant ongoing training.
Contract Type: You will be contracted to work only when required by the organisation. There will be no guarantee of future work – this is called a Zero Hours Contract.

Contingency Fire Operative Applications:
Pay:  £13.40 per hour during any period of training or work undertaken.
Retention Fee: £200 retention payment for every 4-week period of availability post training. Please be aware that to receive the retention payment you must attend at least 4 out of 8 weekend scheduled top up training courses/days within a calendar year.
Contract Type: Following your initial training you will be contracted to work only as and when required.

There will be no guarantee of future work – this is called a Zero Hours Contract.

Considering the demanding nature of emergency and fire response work you must be medically fit for the role and must have a high level of physical fitness. A fitness test, practical assessment and full medical assessment including substance misuse testing will be an integral part of our selection process. Previous experience of using Respiratory Protection Equipment and/or working in a safety critical/disciplined environment would be an advantage.
