Bikes Sales Mechanic & Volunteer Coordinator – Part Time
Bristol
About Us
We are Life Cycle UK, a charity that helps people feel healthier, happier and more connected to each other – using cycling as a vehicle. Based in Bristol and working across the West of England and Derbyshire, we have been transforming lives through cycling since 1999. We know that cycling will play a key role in tackling our society’s biggest challenges: poor health and wellbeing, COVID-19 and the climate emergency.
Our work is underpinned by our belief that cycling is an inherently simple, safe and accessible activity. However, this view isn’t shared by everyone. We work to remove the barriers to accessing this low-cost, ‘green’ and healthy form of transport by giving people of all ages and backgrounds the skills and confidence to cycle safely.
We are now looking for a Bike Sales Mechanic and Volunteer Coordinator to join the team at our award-winning workshop in the car park of Bristol prison on a part-time basis.
The Benefits
- Salary of £19,570 - £22,660 pro rata
- Pension scheme
- 39 days’ holiday per annum (pro rata)
- Staff discounts on refurbished bikes
- Cycle to work scheme
- Free cycle training and an annual bike check-up
- Discounted Endura cycle clothing
If you are passionate about cycling and getting others into it and eager to pass on your bike mechanic skills to a new generation of cycling enthusiasts, this is the ideal role in which to get more people on two wheels and more people trained to service and repair bikes.
We’re looking for individuals with bike maintenance skills and experience of delivering training to others to enhance our team and support our efforts as our organisation grows.
We believe that cycling should be accessible to all and your role will be key to making this ethos a reality. So why not turn your passion into a career and get involved today, we’re looking forward to hearing from you.
The Role
As a Bike Sales Mechanic and Volunteer Coordinator, you will be tasked with supporting the day-to-day operations of our workshop.
Specifically, you will split your time between refurbishing bikes, managing stock, coordinating bike sales and training and supporting our volunteer bike mechanics.
You will select suitable bikes for others to work on, perform final checks on the work that is done and then list the bikes for sale online. Answering queries from customers, you will also support low-income customers to access our discount scheme.
The other side of your role will involve training volunteers and supporting them to positively contribute to our prison bike recycling scheme. Due to the current pandemic situation, we are in the process of re-thinking how and when we use volunteers and you will play a key role in supporting new processes.
About You
To be considered as a Bike Sales Mechanic and Volunteer Coordinator, you will need:
- Experience of sharing bike maintenance skills with others (does not need to be in a formal setting)
- Experience of delivering recognised qualifications OR the willingness to become an accredited Tutor
- Excellent mechanical skills (equivalent to Cytech or City & Guilds Level 2 bicycle industry standard)
Experience of working with volunteers, ex-offenders or other similar challenging client groups would be beneficial to your application. Experience of working in the bike industry would also be an advantage, as would a City & Guilds Level 2 in Cycle Mechanics or similar qualification.
Other organisations may call this role Bike Mechanic, Bicycle Mechanic, Bike Shop Mechanic, Bike Sales Advisor, Cycle Mechanic, Cycle Mechanics Instructor, Cycle Mechanics Teacher, Bicycle Workshop Teacher, or Bike Workshop Instructor.
This is a part-time role working three days/22.5 hours per week, leaving you plenty of time to pursue other interests.
The closing date for this role is the 2nd October 2020.
