Cycle Mechanics Tutor (Term Time Only)
Bristol

About Us

We are Life Cycle UK, a charity that helps people feel healthier, happier and more connected to each other – using cycling as a vehicle. Based in Bristol and working across the West of England, we have been transforming lives through cycling since 1999. We know that cycling will play a key role in tackling our society’s biggest challenges: poor health and wellbeing, COVID-19 and the climate emergency.

Our work is underpinned by our belief that cycling is an inherently simple, safe and accessible activity. However, this view isn’t shared by everyone. We work to remove the barriers to accessing this low-cost, ‘green’ and healthy form of transport by giving people of all ages and backgrounds the skills and confidence to cycle safely.

We’ve partnered with City of Bristol College to deliver a programme of bike maintenance courses to 16-24 years olds and other paying members of the public. As such, we are now looking for a Cycle Mechanics Tutor to join our team and pass their knowledge on. This is a full-time role working five days per week during term time only for a fixed-term contract until the 31st July 2021.

The Benefits

- Salary of £21,115 - £25,235 pro rata
- Pension scheme
- 39 days’ holiday per annum (pro rata)
- Staff discounts on refurbished bikes
- Cycle to work scheme
- Free cycle training and an annual bike check-up
- Discounted Endura cycle clothing

This is a rare and astounding opportunity for an individual with great mechanical skills, experience of working with challenging groups of young people and a passion for bikes and cycling to merge all three of these areas into one highly rewarding position.

Cycling is a way of life, be it on skinny rims, fat tyres, three wheels, full suspension, no suspension or even electrically powered. It’s also an exceptionally fun, cost-effective, environmentally friendly way of getting around that is accessible to almost everyone.

This role represents an amazing chance to pass your skills, knowledge, lived experience and absolute passion on to young people and members of the public who can enhance their own lives through cycling. Be it giving a young person the confidence to fix their own bike or an older person the basic maintenance skills they need to get outside and enjoy themselves, you’ll be making a real difference and changing lives.

The Role

As a Cycle Mechanics Tutor, you will be tasked with delivering a range of courses and workshops that will equip young people and other members of the public with the skills they need to maintain and upkeep bicycles.

From our workshop, you will teach bike mechanics to young people aged 16-24 from a range of backgrounds including social, emotional and mental health needs or those on an education, health and care plan. Alongside City of Bristol College staff, you will provide a mixture of accredited City & Guilds training with the opportunity to put skills into practical use for the benefits of the local community.

The other area of your role will include teaching members of the public from a diverse range of backgrounds. You will help them build skills within a formal setting and gain recognised qualifications up to City & Guilds Level 2 standard.

About You

To be considered as a Cycle Mechanics Tutor, you will need:

- Experience of working with disengaged young people, offenders, those with Special Educational Needs or similar challenging client groups
- Excellent mechanical skills (equivalent to Cytech or City & Guilds Level 2 bicycle industry standard)
- Good motivation skills and the ability to build rapport, show care and understand people from all walks of life
- Experience of sharing bike maintenance skills with others
- Punctuality, reliability and professionalism
- Self-motivation and confidence working independently
- Good knowledge of health and safety systems and managing a safe environment
- Enthusiasm for Life Cycle’s project and mission
- Listening and communication skills
- The ability to manage stress well
- A good level of computer literacy

Other organisations may call this role Bike Mechanic, Bicycle Mechanic, Youth Worker, Outreach Worker, Community Worker, Support Worker, Cycle Mechanics Instructor, Cycle Mechanics Teacher, Bicycle Workshop Teacher, Bicycle Workshop Supervisor, or Bike Workshop Instructor.

The closing date for this role is the 5th October 2020.
