The Council is seeking a graduate trainee to join our small Procurement Team. Graduates from a business discipline (or potentially law or finance graduates) will be ideally suited to this role which offers an excellent career opportunity.

The Procurement Team supports the Council with obtaining goods, services and works from external suppliers. Central to the role is the use of professional procurement techniques to assist colleagues with obtaining value for money, whilst complying with relevant legislation. Procurement is a discipline which requires a structured, carefully planned and meticulous approach.

This is a permanent role with the potential for further progression subject to objectives being met and the completion of qualifications. The successful applicant will be required to undertake a programme of self-study to attain Membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (MCIPS).

The successful candidate will develop their commercial awareness and technical procurement skills by being involved in a wide range of procurement activities. With experience, you will have the opportunity to lead and manage your own procurement exercises. A critical part of the role is building good working relationships with colleagues from across the Council through effective communication and by having a customer-focused approach.

This will be a challenging, but rewarding, role. The ability to communicate clearly in writing will be critical, you will need to be a team player and be comfortable in dealing with figures. To be successful you will need to combine technical competence (learnt on the job) with softer influencing and relationship management skills.

Applicants should note that:
  • This post is not suitable for job share.
  • The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exceptions) (Scotland) Order 2013, as amended, applies to this post.
