You will work within the team of 2 Partners, a Trainee and 4 Chartered Planners in the Planning team, with the wider Real Estate department consisting of over 107 staff and Partners being based in our other offices.

DMH Stallard is a Legal 100 firm with a headcount of 295, which provides integrated legal services from offices in London, Gatwick, Guildford, Horsham and Brighton. We are recognised as one of the leading planning and environmental practices in the South and some of our practitioners are recognised as leaders in their fields of practice.

We are looking for a junior solicitor to join our Planning team with the role being based across our Gatwick and Guildford offices. We are willing to consider both full-time and part-time applicants.

The team does a wide range of contentious and non contentious work across the general disciplines of planning and environmental law, including infrastructure work (i.e. highways agreements, drainage/sewerage agreements) and statutory/common law nuisance. We also have experience of other regulatory regimes such as health and safety.

The role is to operate as an effective member of the Planning Group, dealing with client work, helping with business development activities and assist with building up and maintaining our knowledge base about changing legislation and regulation. The individual will be responsible under supervision for own caseload of work and own fee targets. The primary focus of the work (and the business development activities) will be:

  • Section 106, CIL work
  • Planning/environmental related litigation - i.e. s 288 and s 289 claims, judicial review, defending prosecutions, nuisance cases
  • Planning Appeal work - inquiries, hearings and written reps
  • Planning applications
  • Project management of large planning applications or litigation
  • Certificates of Lawful Use
  • Highways and other infrastructure agreements
  • Rights of Way advice and related inquiries
  • Village Green advice and related inquiries
  • Corporate Support
  • Property Support
  • Compulsory Purchase advice and related objections, inquiries etc.
  • Statutory Nuisance

WHO AND WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The key criteria for the ideal candidate will include:

  • An interest in planning, environmental and regulatory work in the widest sense - to include related areas i.e. waste, renewables, highways and other infrastructure, rights of way, compulsory purchase, health and safety, and those listed above.
  • A good understanding of the planning system, environmental law, highways law, compulsory purchase etc. including related legislation and relevant case law.
  • A willingness to contribute to business development and to take on and act in a support role to the Group's business development campaigns.
  • The ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively both with the team and with clients.
  • The ability to effectively manage your time to achieve client and internal deadlines.
  • An understanding of the importance of client care with an ability to deal with a wide range of clients with differing objectives including being able to understand the commercial objectives of the client.
  • The ability to draft documentation, with attention to detail.
