Role: Senior IT Technician

Salary: GBP22,413 - GBP24,046 per annum depending on experience

Location: Derbyshire

The role:

Our client are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior IT Technician to join their successful and hardworking team. Reporting to the IT Manager, the role will entail providing dedicated onsite support to staff and students to ensure an outstanding level of IT provision across their school. This will include responding to helpdesk enquiries and user admin requests,
managing IT hardware and software assets, monitoring network performance and
security systems, and troubleshooting day-to-day issues. The role will be busy and
varied with no two days the same.

Purpose of the Role

Responsibility for support and maintenance of the school's network infrastructure. To
assist the IT Manager in the implementation and maintenance of desktop and server
computer systems and associated peripherals.

General Responsibilities

• Administer and control the full life cycle of all client software applications,
including, installation, user/computer allocation, problem resolution, upgrade
and removal.
• Strong knowledge of GDPR
• To be involved with IT meetings and preparation of strategic documentation
and reports to enable the IT Manager to make key decisions.
• Monitor and maintain the condition of the school's computer equipment so as
to maximise the availability and potential of the systems. This will involve
locating and correcting faults or arranging repair as required and liaising with
suppliers.
• Give input to the development of school policies with regard to standards of
operation and use of IT equipment throughout the school and ensure they are
applied.
• Assist the IT Manager in the evaluation of and selection of computer hardware
and software, and to undertake the installation of system upgrades, checking
compatibility.
• Continued development of the "electronic face" of the school.
• Adhere to current strategies and policies to prevent loss of data through illegal
access and damage by viruses and other means.
• React appropriately on finding breaches of security and evidence of new risks
to which systems are exposed.
• Administer all user accounts, particularly Active Directory & the schools MIS
system, following current guidelines and procedures.
• Maintain and contribute to the development of the schools IT systems.
• Be an active participant in developing, planning and implementing IT projects.
• Maintain high levels of confidentiality and integrity whilst troubleshooting
documents which may contain information of a confidential or sensitive
nature.
• Prepare computer systems for use in external examinations. Adhering to
invigilator policy & time restraints.
• Supervise IT suite at lunchtimes every day. Managing student behaviour,
giving guidance on learning and homework and ensuring correct usage of
facilities.
• Support out of hours IT sessions.
• Installation of IT infrastructure which may involve working in unfavourable
conditions such as at height, outdoors, noisy / dusty environments, confined
spaces and the moving of heavy equipment.
• Deliver training to staff and students in the use of IT.
• Provide technical support to all departments to ensure the curriculum is able
to be delivered effectively.
• Proactive research of desktop hardware and software with follow-on
implementation.
• Responsibility for maintaining documentation for equipment and keeping an
accurate inventory of valuable IT equipment.
• Provide technical support and advice, for hardware, software, network
devices, desktops, thin clients, Windows Servers, printers. Prepare laptops
and portable devices with relevant encryption technologies. Digital signage,
email and internet related matters and a wide variety of software.
• Lead on a whole school project which will impact upon IT usage. The post
holder will be responsible for driving the project forwards and reporting back
to the IT Manager on progress.
• Responsibility for making key decisions in the absence of other team
members.
• Provide support for partner primary schools, if required.
• Use Group Policies to deploy software to different areas of the school based
on Active directory topology. Deploy new printers via printer scripts written in
Visual Basic. Use Windows update deployment servers to install new
machines and laptops, add new hardware to the domain and inventory.
• Unsupervised continuous monitoring, diagnosis and repair/replacement of all
items of IT equipment.
• Responsible for monitoring internet usage to ensure the safeguarding of our
staff and students. Proactively block inappropriate web content. Additionally
taking responsibility for flagging vulnerable students and producing
management reports accordingly.

The successful candidate:

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

• Degree or significant relevant experience
• Familiar with PCs, operating systems and PC construction
• Good understanding of server technology, server hardware, Microsoft
operating systems.
• Good understanding of computer networks especially relating to TCP/IP,
Switching, Firewalls & VLAN's
• Evidence of a high level of skill in the implementation and maintenance
of ICT applications in a school environment
• Excellent practical and problem solving skills
• Ability to plan, monitor and evaluate initiatives
• Ability to work effectively with other members of the IT and wider school
teams
