If you are interested in a career as a Microelectronics Designer with an exciting, challenging and diverse portfolio of work, and you are enthusiastic, have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a team environment, then we have a range of exciting opportunities for you.

About the CMOS Sensor Design Group

The CMOS Sensor Design Group at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is world-leading in the design of CMOS Image Sensor for the most challenging of applications. These applications range from 'big science' applications for Space or Particle Physics experiments, Synchrotron instrumentation and Nuclear Physics experiments, to advanced industrial applications such as Medical X-ray imaging or ultra-high speed imaging.

Our designs are contributing to making extraordinary scientific discoveries, from understanding our biology to exploring new planets, as well as improving the quality of our daily life, for example providing better diagnostic and therapeutic tools to healthcare.

You will work on real projects from day one and duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Specification, detailed design, simulation and layout of low-noise, high-performance CMOS Image sensors
  • Transistor level analogue design, simulation, full custom layout and physical verification of circuits such as op-amps, ADCs and DACs, gigabit I/O ports
  • Design of novel pixels using state-of-art microelectronics technologies
  • Physical device modelling of CMOS image sensor pixels
  • Verilog HDL coding, digital simulation, synthesis, and place & route layout
  • Managing microelectronics design projects
  • Interact constructively with Customers, Group members and other staff in the Department & Laboratory
  • Active participation in design reviews.

About you

You will be educated to BEng (first class or 2:1) or higher in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of basic analogue microelectronic design principles. You will have substantial experience in managing small designs, and substantial experience in managing large designs to be considered at band E. Knowledge of relevant EDA packages is also required.

You will be able to use unmodified VDU equipment and complex programming software for extended periods of time.

A PHD in a relevant discipline or knowledge of basic digital microelectronic design principles would be advantageous but is not essential.
