Planet Forward have recently been engaged by a UK based systems integrator operating in the Defence/Maritime industries. Our client are looking for a Linux Software Engineer to work on cutting edge technologies and to further support them in delivering world leading products, solutions and services to their customers.

Position Overview:

The role will involve working closely within the software development teams to design, develop and deploy a range of complex software solutions hosted on Linux platforms and provide Linux specific expertise in the areas of installation, configuration and optimization. The software will form part of a sonar system interfacing to supplied hardware and will be integrated onto dedicated and shared computing platforms for a wide range of in-service ships and advanced research applications.

Key Responsibilities:

* Linux Operating System configuration

* Linux application development and deployment

* Defect investigation and defect resolution

* Support of integration and verification activities

* Accountable for cost and schedule of assigned work

Skills, Qualification and Experience:

* Red Hat Linux application development - Essential

* Red Hat configuration including production of Kickstart files - Essential

* C++ or Java Development - Essential

* Linux device driver development - Desirable

* Linux Device Driver porting - Desirable

* Red Hat certification (RHCSA, RHCE) or similar - Desirable

* Hands on experience of DevOps practices and tools - Desirable

* VMware - Desirable

* RTI DDS Experience - Desirable

* IP Network design and optimisation - Desirable

* Proficient with a variety of Software Configuration Tools including SVN and GIT - Desirable

* Sonar background - Desirable

* Degree in engineering, computer science or related subject

Personal Attributes:

* Capable of achieving Security Clearance to at least SC level

* Self-motivated, adaptable to change, proactive, diligent and with good inter-personal skills

* Ability to rapidly apply generic knowledge to new problems in new environments

* Knowledge of Software Engineering best practices, methodologies, processes and tools
