About the role:

Environmental screening and assessment:

• To lead the development and implementation of processes that protect the company's reputation and prevent prosecution for failing to comply with UK and EU legislation for activities carried out on our own sites and by our contractors working across the Thames Water area.
• To undertake site surveys as necessary.
• To identify the business needs across the company and prioritise the work that needs to be done by internal specialists, that which will need external support and what can be safely done as part of routine job planning.
• To engage the leadership teams in Operations, Capital Delivery and Asset Management to ensure practical implementation is properly supported.
  

Operational supervision:

• To provide the practical skills of analysis and interpretation of survey data for assessment of more complex site-based historical and archaeological impacts ensuring EIA and SIA are carried out where required.
• Design, supervise and mentor more complex, site-based and local archaeology surveys, which are fit for a specific purpose.

• Audits to ensure company-wide assessment standards are maintained.

Permitting and assent:
Undertake consultation with Historic England and Local Planning Authority representatives to ensure appropriate consents are in place for activities that require them (scheduled monuments etc).

Incident response:
Lead the relationship with Historic England for incidents affecting sensitive sites and local stakeholders (e.g. National Trust) in the event of compliance failures and to agree remedial measures needed.
The jobholder will be required to undertake site visits and surveys throughout the Thames Region. Some occasional overnight and out of hours work may be involved.

Must hold a valid driving licence

To be successful you will have the following skills and experience:

• First degree in a relevant subject (second degree and relevant professional membership, such as MIfA). Post qualification experience desirable though not essential.
• Managerial/leadership experience in a similar sized company.
• Good surveying skills.
• Sound knowledge and experience in heritage impact assessments and planning policy.
• Sound knowledge of UK and European legislation - particularly relating to protection of Scheduled Monuments.
• Ability to understand and interpret GIS information.
• Good written, negotiation and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to communicate heritage issues to a business audience, and business issues to a heritage audience.
• Ability to work under their own initiative as well as be quick to learn new procedures.
• Diplomacy and confidence to deal with people at all levels and from different professional backgrounds.
• Willingness to learn and develop own ideas whilst taking on new challenges.
• Experience of heritage assessment and mitigation.
• Project and contractor management skills desirable.
• Water industry knowledge / experience desirable.
