Interim Communications Lead Officer - Media Relations & Copywriting
You will support the Communications Team Leader and help the communications team through a busy period, in a complex and fast-paced environment. Working with different departments across South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils you will help to develop and implement communications plans and materials for their services, projects and initiatives.
Interim Communications Lead Officer Responsibilities:
• Line management of one or two communications officers depending on experience
• Overseeing the implementation, development and improvement of the councils' new websites
• Advise on and lead the development of new digital ideas to solve day to day and strategic council communications needs and train communications officers and other relevant officers on their use
• Review and improve the councils' digital communications existing offerings
• Advise the Chief Executive, Leaders and staff at all levels on good communications
• Deputising for the Communications Team Leader or Community Enablement Manager as required and provide advice and guidance where appropriate to the rest of the Communications team.
The duties may vary from time to time without changing the nature of the post or the level of responsibility and the post holder may also be required to carry out any other duties appropriate to the grading of the post.
Interim Communications Lead Officer Requirements:
• Considerable media relations experience, especially in handling sensitive media enquiries quickly and effectively
• Exceptional writing abilities, able to simplify complex subjects and easily adapt your style for different audiences - internal and external - using different communications channels, like e-newsletters, websites, social media, flyers, leaflets, press releases and formal statements
• Experience of developing multi-channel communication strategies, or communication plans and have excellent writing and content creation skills
• A relevant professional qualification or equivalent demonstrable vocational experience
• Have worked in the local or national government, or other public sector bodies, or have strong experience of working in politically sensitive environments
• Extensive experience of using social media, in particular Twitter and Facebook
• Knowledge and understanding of website content management systems, ideally Wordpress
• Extensive experience of using the range of Microsoft applications, photo and video editing software
• Excellent organisational skills
