35 hours per week

The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham is seeking to appoint a full time Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser to deliver safeguarding provision across the Diocese through expertise, advice and training.

Based in Southwell, the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA) will be responsible to the Diocesan Bishop and Diocesan Chief Executive for providing the leadership and supervision of the Diocesan Safeguarding Team, to promote the highest standard of safeguarding practice. The work of the team is overseen by a Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel (DSAP) which has an Independent Chair.  The DSA’s responsibilities will include provision of information to the DSAP, undertaking and overseeing casework and providing advice, guidance and training in relation to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults to parishes, clergy and Diocesan senior staff.  The DSA line manages an Assistant Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser, a Training Officer and an Administration Assistant.

This is an opportunity for a suitably experienced professional with a social work, probation, police or other relevant background to use their skills to continue to develop and sustain a culture which ensures that children and vulnerable people are safe in our churches and that those who pose any risk are effectively managed.

The DSA will be skilled at building trust quickly and instilling confidence.  They will also demonstrate a professional curiosity, and highly developed emotional intelligence to ensure that the Diocese responds positively and well to those who have suffered alleged abuse.  They should possess the ability to work independently and under pressure yet remain self-motivated.  The DSA should also have the requisite leadership skills to help shape a strategic framework for Diocesan safeguarding provision and to advise the Diocesan Bishop on safeguarding matters and the implementation of policies and guidelines agreed by the National Church.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in partnership with statutory agencies at a cabinet level, as well as an ability to develop strong, collaborative networks with the National Church and other Diocesan safeguarding teams.  They will have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, good record keeping and report writing skills with a high attention to detail.

The nature of the post will require a degree of mobility and flexibility, with work undertaken in locations around the Diocese and some meetings or training events taking place during evenings and weekends, for which time off in lieu would need to be taken.

The closing date for applications is: 11 February 2020

Interviews will take place in Southwell on: 24 February 2020
