HMRC is one of the largest organisations in the UK and we run the biggest digital operation in Government. Our digital business runs the IT behind tax and benefits services for 45 million individual and 4.9 million business customers.

We're making HMRC's services and information simpler, clearer and faster for individuals and businesses. To do that, our (url removed) team needs content design leaders who understand the web, technology and people.

About the role

As a Design Lead for HMRC's (url removed) team, you will maintain an overview of the work taking place across the team. Our team design HMRC guidance published on (url removed), and work in collaboration with service teams to produce content that supports users from the start to finish of their journey.

You will help the team develop their relationship with partners, including dealing with issued as needed. You will also work with our leadership team to help coordinate and integrate (url removed) content design across our delivery centres and interactive services.

You will be responsible for building design culture and expertise, playing a key role in embedding digital design skills across design teams.

You will lead a team of content designers, helping to build a collaborative environment, communities of practice and grow HMRC talent in the content design profession.

Your role will include a wide range of activities, including:

• leading a team to deliver high-quality, user-focused content for (url removed) and meeting (url removed) style and design standards
helping team members identify ways to improve content and user journeys (for example, simplifying complex content and improving findability)

• developing working relationships with subject matter experts, GDS and other colleagues

• leading quality assurance, including peer review, fact check processes, and design critiques

• establishing and managing content maintenance processes

• monitoring and analysing the performance of content and tools, and working with the wider team to understand user behaviours and feedback

• helping the team work in an agile environment with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads and goals

• effective demand and resource planning in collaboration with operations and scrum team management

• line-managing a design team

• working as part of the design leadership team to enable strategic and organisational change

Design Leads report to the Digital Head of Design.

Person specificationThe following skills and experience are essential:

• design and creation of content that is accessible, usable, findable and based on user needs (you'll need to include examples of recent content you have designed, or that have been designed by a team that you have led, as links within your application)

• wider content design activity such as developing content strategy, knowledge management, information architecture, or search engine optimisation

• working in collaborative environments while maintaining effective performance

• content design leadership, coaching and mentoring

• excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills

• stakeholder engagement: collaborating, communicating and developing understanding and support of user-centred design

It would be useful if you also have skills and experience in:

• working in an agile environment with multi-disciplinary teams

• knowledge of digital transformation

• familiarity with (url removed) style, plain English standards or the GDS service manual

• prototyping experience
