To provide highly specialist scientific input, related to electronic assistive technology specifically
environmental controls and access to the computer, to enable the service to assess and support
people with the most complex physical disabilities across the area covered by the service.
Knowledge Training & Experience
State registered Clinical Scientist or pre-registrant trainee, completed Clinical Scientist training in Clinical Engineering with a specific placement in Rehabilitation Engineering.
2. To demonstrate specialist knowledge of Electronic Assistive Technology, usually acquired through formal training at Master's degree equivalent level in Clinical Engineering with additional specialist training and experience in the application of Clinical Engineering principles to EAT practice.
3. To have specialist knowledge and practical experience of the working practices and theory underpinning Rehabilitation Engineering, Medical Electronics and Medical Equipment Management in order to provide expert advice.
4. To demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to, professional standards & clinical guidelines as well as national and local guidelines for clinical practice.
5. To maintain a working knowledge of relevant education and health procedures including safeguarding, infection control, manual handling, information governance and health & safety.
6. To maintain a working knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance and their application to professional practice.
7. To apply highly developed specialist skills and knowledge in order to maintain professional competence and fitness to practice as an Advanced Clinical Scientist.
8. Knowledge of and adherence to the Trust and Service policies and procedures, national guidelines; and the professional standards.
9. Ability to identify own professional development needs and develop a professional portfolio within the appraisal framework, including specific objectives related to clinical specialism
10. Up to date knowledge of clinical, social, political and philosophical changes relevant speech and language therapy with the specialist client group
11. Demonstration of regular maintenance of knowledge through attendance at Special Interest Groups, relevant courses and reading.
12. Maintenance of mandatory training in line with Trust policy
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Carry a clinical caseload as part of the multi-disciplinary team, undertaking assessment,
2. giving advice, making recommendations and providing equipment to adults and children
3. having a range of complex conditions; this includes working across a range of
4. environments around the region
5. Lead and take full responsibility for the provision of off the shelf and custom made EAT solutions, including design, manufacture and maintenance, ensuring that the requirements of the Medical Devices Directive and relevant national and international standards are met.
6. To provide highly specialist Clinical Engineering services, related to Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT) to enable the service to assess and support children and adults across the area with the most complex physical needs.
7. To be a key link to other local and regional Assistive Technology Services, including Wheelchairs and Bristol Communication Aids Service and other specialist providers, with the purpose of improving outcomes for patients
8. To liaise with multidisciplinary staff from all referring trusts, both in a clinical (patient
related) capacity and an advisory capacity.
9. To pursue and advance ongoing knowledge and expertise in the field of EAT for practice with the above client group.
10. To be a member of the specialist team within Bristol Centre for Enablement and undertake joint working and give advice to colleagues, as appropriate.
11. To support the development and delivery of the Service's strategy for training and equipping patients, their carers and other professionals to address issues associated with the use of EAT for clients with complex needs across the area as appropriate.
12. To work as a member of the clinical team taking the lead on clinical assessments when appropriate.
13. To take the lead on and undertake audit and research within the field of EAT as appropriate.
14. To work with colleagues around the region to ensure the best outcome for patients.
15. To advise the department manager on new EAT equipment coming into the market.
16. To provide bespoke EAT solutions for people referred to the service.
17. To monitor and evaluate effectiveness using of evidence-based practice, and where necessary initiate additional care plan and outcome measure tools.
18. To negotiate with carers/clients/others around individual case management, ensuring client involvement.
19. To provide written and/or verbal reports that present highly specialist clinical information, which is accessible for carers and/or clients and other professional colleague
