During their placement they will gain experience in the following areas:
- Clinical trials: The student will support multiple clinical teams on trials working alongside the Clinical Data Manager to ensure high quality data is delivered as per regulatory expectations. This could involve working with the data collected on a clinical trial (demography data, disease characteristics data, lab data, radiology data, safety and efficacy data) and ensuring the data is collected correctly by interrogating the data using computerised checks or manually reviewing the data using various systems.
- Data Management: They will learn the role of data management in clinical trials and the various activities that need to be performed to ensure that data is acquired and validated effectively so that it meets the required quality and privacy standards.
- Clinical trial Systems: They will work with variety of colleagues who work in clinical trials both in the UK and in other countries e.g. scientists, operations, safety, monitoring, working with vendors (e.g. lab vendors, scan vendors), site staff, clinicians and will use a variety of different databases and systems as they conduct their work.
- Therapy area knowledge: They will be working in one of the therapy areas listed previously. They will need to understand the scientific protocols for each trial that they support (a clinical protocol contains the objectives, science behind the trial, methods etc. of the clinical trial)
