Client:

Our client is a leading adhesives manufacturer and has ambitious plans to significantly increase the revenues of the business, as it grows market share. The business wishes to leverage the technical sales support it offers to existing customers, to develop its position in the market by entering new application areas and market sectors for adhesives. A key element in this plan is the appointment of an aspirational Operations Manager.

This individual is attracted by the possibility of progression to business leadership through demonstration of management and mentoring of an operational team, committed to continuous improvement of an operationally efficient safe, healthy environmental compliant quality function.

As a chemical engineering / chemistry graduate, the individual will have experience and understanding of the manufacture of chemical formulations in adhesive.

The role:

Lead and direct activities of the manufacturing, warehousing, and engineering operations to provide an environmentally sound, safe, healthy and profitable working environment.

Responsibilities:

* Lead continuous improvements in the resources required and ensure processes are in place in safety, quality, environment, reliability and efficiency at the site

* As a member of the management team, be responsible to the Head of Operations for administration, planning, co-ordination, resource acquisition / deployment, and implementation of activities at the site. Formulate and embed good practice and procedures

* Oversee day-to-day activities in the operations and notify Managers of any issues that arise, which may have an impact on their management of their KPIs and objectives

* Work closely with the Technical and commercial team, lead and manage the introduction of new products into the manufacturing plant

* Ensure the high maintenance and security of the site

* Responsible for the recruitment, retention, administration, appraisal, remuneration and management of all Operations personnel, advising the Head of Operations as appropriate

* Participate in budget planning for all resource and costs associated with the profitable and efficient performance in Operations, including materials, packaging, labour and storage

* Monitor and report against budget responsibility on the performance of those budget areas, providing analysis and actions on at least a monthly basis

* Monitor safe handling, identification, storage and removal of hazardous waste streams, resulting from production activities

* Adhere to the sites requirements specified in the Safety and Environment Management System by maintaining compliance to the relevant procedures and supporting the business in fulfilling the obligations enshrined in the relevant Policies and Accreditations

* Participate in and, where appropriate, lead Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality initiatives, as set forth by the Company

* Prepare the Production Schedules in respect of customer orders, sales budget and forecast. Assess and monitor raw material requirements, ensuring availability, and direct the activities of the Materials Controller

* Ensure that Customer Services have accurate timely information available on product availability and delivery schedule

* Responsible for fulfilling any reasonable request from the Managing Director in undertaking ad hoc projects

Person specification:

* Graduate level qualification in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field. Strong analytical and technical capability

* Minimum 5 years' supervisor / man-management experience in a chemical manufacturing, or closely aligned highly regulated manufacturing operation where Health, Safety, Environment and Quality specifications and parameters are key

* Further professional qualifications in Quality or Safety Management preferred

* Experience with operating in, or implementation of, MRPII planning, processes and disciplines

* Experience of budget planning, responsibility, monitoring and management

* A high level of IT literacy

* Ability to motivate, manage and influence own team. Able to work cross-functionally contributing to the delivery of the business KPIs and objectives

* Good written and oral communication skills, allowing good interaction with all stakeholders

* Personal qualities and characteristics to contribute and enjoy being part of a small team in an SME environment

* Be ambitious, seeking continual personal development and keen to progress to business leadership
