As the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar we deliver reliable, efficient and cost-effective aids to navigation such as lighthouses, lightvessels, buoys and radio navigation, ensuring thousands of mariners navigate their way safely around the UK’s busiest waters. Proud of our reputation afforded to us by many centuries of dedication to the nation’s maritime infrastructure, we are a forward-thinking organisation and it is our ability to meet new challenges and the changing requirements of the modern mariner that keeps us relevant and effective.

Working under an established Senior Civil Technician, covering all aspects of lighthouse buildings and estate maintenance, the role comprises two facets: “primarily” physical hands on work within capabilities such as all aspects of carpentry work, re-glazing a lantern room or small repairs to buildings, for which excellent carpentry skills and a range of general building skills and experience are essential, “secondly” supervising contractors and raising minor contract specifications. You will be expected to have a good understanding of health and safety legislation, part of the role will require you to carry out risk assessments for all work to be conducted within your jurisdiction, and be accountable for the stores issued for the execution of assigned work. In addition, you will assist with general lighthouse operations including helicopter operations.

This role covers a wide geographical area with a variety of projects to co-ordinate, often in remote locations, you must be adaptable and flexible and an understanding of building and planning regulations would be desirable. Previous experience of basic site supervision would advantageous as would an understanding of CDM regulations. A relevant technical qualification is essential as is a high aptitude for working with IT.

The post will be based in St Just, but will involve extensive UK travel and extended time away from home and the depot. Duties will involve working with helicopters and boats and in a physically challenging environment; thus a suitable level of fitness is required.
