We are looking for an experienced Senior IT Engineer to join the Department of Engineering's Information and Computing Services group (ICS). The ICS group is made up of more than 30 staff with expertise in networking, windows and Linux systems, messaging, storage, printing and software development.  In addition to the central Support and Infrastructure teams ICS has dedicated IT staff embedded in academic divisions across the Department and you will be based in the Whittle Laboratory on the West Cambridge campus.

The Whittle Laboratory undertakes world leading experimental and computational aerodynamic research. The laboratory has long established links with international manufacturers of turbomachinery (including RR, Siemens, MHI and Dyson) and more recently with companies such as Reaction Engines.

The successful candidate will deliver IT services within the Whittle Laboratory working closely with the academics providing support for teaching and research.  You will be expected to be involved at all levels in the support and development of the IT infrastructure associated with the activities of the Whittle Laboratory and to liaise with organisations for which the laboratory is undertaking research. Work activities would include, but not be limited to, specification of standard and specialist computer hardware; planning and implementation of IT projects; maintaining network and data security and advising research staff on computational platforms and storage facilities. An ideal candidate would have demonstrable skills and experience with:

  • Providing IT services in an academic environment
  • Network and Data Security such as ISO/IEC 27000
  • Source Control and Secure Code Management
  • Delivering front line, customer facing IT support
  • Troubleshooting PC and Server hardware and software issues
  • Microsoft Windows (7, 10) and Office products
  • Microsoft Server (2008, 2012, 2016), Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Linux (CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Raspberry PI)
  • Networking (DNS, DHCP, CISCO)

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking a position where they will be exposed to a wide range of technologies in a dynamic environment and can work independently as well as part of a larger team. You will be educated to degree level or have an equivalent level of experience, with demonstrable experience of Linux and Microsoft system administration, data management and end user support. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work as a highly pro-active, persuasive and enthusiastic team member.
