Salary: Year 1 £12,096 (under 21 years old), £15,839 (21 years and over)
Hours: Full Time, 37 hours per week
Contract: Fixed Term for duration of apprenticeship
We are looking for a full-time apprentice to train with our experienced team of science technicians. You will be based in our new Maths and Science Centre at Exeter College supporting teaching staff to deliver science practical activities and demonstrations to learners across our range of courses. These include A Levels, BTEC, Access to Higher Education and GCSEs across chemistry, biology, physics, forensic science, geology and environmental science. Each subject is taught in 12 dedicated and well-equipped laboratories serving each of these disciplines. You will mainly work out of one of three subject-specific preparation rooms.
You will have an interest in science and want to support others to learn. You will have good communication skills, the ability to work on your own initiative (with support at first as required), a logical approach and a good eye for detail. It is essential that you can work selflessly as part of a team to help your fellow technicians and staff to deliver an outstanding experience for our students.
As part of this role you will spend one day a week studying Applied Science in more detail to help you gain a theoretical understanding to complement the practical skills you will develop on-the-job. Through this you should gain a Level 3 BTEC Diploma, equivalent to two A levels in Science. This will be a fast-paced course which will require assignments to be regularly completed in your own time. You will also be expected to work during term time and take your holidays in the college holiday period. You will have a mentor and support from the technician team and the wider faculty staff.
We will aim to develop your skills and confidence to enable you to progress to work as an analytical and technically competent technician who could develop your career in any scientific laboratory as your potential next step.
