Job Purpose

A Materials Scientist is required to support a broad range of activities within the Land UK business. The selected candidate will support new technology development projects for future products and processes support Product and Process Development and manufacturing operations in small, medium and high volume environments. Working as part of the Engineering organisation, the role will ensure that our products meet exacting quality and performance requirements.


Responsibilities include the following:

Design and development of new processes and improvement of existing processes, particularly associated with product service life cycle and corrosion, product safety, general forming and production of raw metallic and non-metallic materials, heat treatment, surface engineering and surface coatings.
Support product development planning, via involvement with internal Product and Process Technology projects.
Liaise with Design Engineers, Procurement Professionals, Universities and their associated manufacturing development enterprises, and raw material suppliers to develop and maintain material specifications, and assess new manufacturing technologies with particular emphasis on evolving regulatory requirements relating to materials and processes influenced by REACH legislation.
Corrosion testing, non-destructive testing (NDT) and mechanical testing of raw materials and components using both internal and external resources.
Assessment and agreement of NDT methods performed by Material Suppliers, prior to delivery.
Assessing supplier's release documentation for material compliance, and liaison with the key supplier technical representatives.
Carry out and support defect analysis and failure investigation from a metallurgical aspect, including metallographic and SEM fractographic and chemical analyses, and corrosion control.
Compile metallurgical reports using information from both internal and external sources.
Witness material testing at source including NDT to ensure compliance with procurement specification and report on findings.Competencies/Skills and Expertise include the following:

Competencies/Skills and Expertise

A recognised metallurgical or material science qualification, preferably to degree level, but minimum HND/HNC.
Experience in providing metallurgical advice in the selection of materials, manufacturing processes and mechanical testing of non-ferrous and ferrous metals, including NDT procedures, and corrosion assessment control.
An understanding of National and International material and material processing Standards.
Experience of quality control and quality assurance techniques applicable to an ISO 9001 accredited company including:
Statistical process control (preferably Minitab).
Fault Tree analysis.
Lean Manufacturing.
