Johnson Matthey's vision is for a world that's cleaner and healthier; today and for future generations. The Battery Materials business is a key strategic investment in a growth opportunity that aligns with our vision - leveraging our world-class science, customer and operational excellence to de-carbonise the automotive powertrain. Underpinning our success is delivery through great people. We are now seeking two talented individuals to join our team - a highly energetic and collaborative group of visionaries that are passionate about delivering the opportunity that is Battery Materials; empowered by the ideal of 'the best of big and small'. This is a fast-growing venture within a well-established Corporate - opportunity abounds to accelerate your career development.

We are currently recruiting for two exciting opportunities in the Product Venturing team. The successful job holders will be responsible for evaluating Battery Material growth opportunities aligned with the business' Technology Roadmap, executing with an incubator-style mindset (we refer to as 'POD'). Working closely with Business Development, the team will be responsible for stewarding the technology prove-out of new opportunities to the point that an investment case can be made, and technology transfer to larger scale can be justified. The team will be responsible for technology input into related strategy and valuation models. Furthermore, have the responsibility of combining all learning into technology transfer packages and provide support during down-stream commercialisation activities.

Key responsibilities
  • Be a key hands-on part of the lean, agile, incubator-style ('POD') team in the technology prove-out of new growth opportunities for the Battery Materials business. This will involve the evaluation of claims (patents, among other sources), synthesis and characterisation of materials by industrialised and step-out technologies, evaluation of third-party data (technology providers, Institutes, Customers), evaluation of relevant literature, modelling. Prove-out can be framed through organic growth, technology licensing/acquisition, joint development, or via a range of Open Innovation methodologies championed by Johnson Matthey's Innovation Factory

  • Support the scouting of technology-led disruptive opportunities for the business, in close collaboration with the Business Development function. Challenge assumptions around products throughout the value chain. Represent Technology in third-party exchanges, incl. support to the Global Commercial team through direct Customer engagement

  • Support all Technology transfers from third-party sources into the business, seeking to maximise value to the company and executing to the highest standards to accelerate commercialisation outlook

  • Prepare internal Technology transfer packages to ensure efficient scale-up in line with NPI best practice. Provide technical support during down-stream commercialisation activities

  • Build network both within (Product, Process and Application) and external to the business to facilitate commercialisation of growth opportunities, feeding the NPI pipeline

Are you the ideal candidate?

You will be/have:

  • An entrepreneurial style that does not shy away from risk

  • PhD-qualified in materials science or chemistry; alternatively, demonstrable experience in a related field. Experience with battery materials and familiarity with related terminology is preferred

  • Ability to be detailed-oriented, but mindful of the power of Minimum Viable Product with the capacity to push through ambiguity

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to flex style across functions and for different audiences

  • Excellent, versatile and timely written skills; emphasis on Technology Transfer documentation

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
