Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning Support

  • Identify, engage with and develop links with other UK and EU universities (Ireland, UK, Iceland and Denmark)
  • Create a mechanism to engage Managing Directors of Welsh / UK / EU food companies in order to develop industrial led food science based research programmes

Research & Scholarship

  • Develop research objectives, projects and proposals
  • Conduct collaborative research projects, primarily research into food safety, food waste, food and health, and education in food science.
  • Manage budgets (Welsh Government funded for this EIT project)
  • Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from own individual scholarship to research projects and appropriate external activities
  • To write or contribute to publications, or disseminate research findings using other appropriate external activities
  • To make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events 

Communication

  • To routinely communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with  limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers, including Food Innovation Wales partners and senior civil servants (and Minister) with Welsh Government using high level skills and a range of media.

Liaison & Networking

  • To collaborate actively within and out with the Institution partner companies / universities, FIW partners and Welsh Government to complete research projects and to advance thinking to participate in and develop external networks, for example, to identify relevant food based projects or build relationships for future activities
  • To motivate full engagement of research focussed staff in FIW to maximise important EU level.
  • To create interventions which best highlight expertise based within Cardiff Metropolitan University, Food Innovation Wales and relevant stakeholders.

Managing People

  • Mentor colleagues with less experience in EIT and advice on personal  development
  • Coach and support colleagues in developing their research techniques
  • Depending upon the areas of expertise, could be expected to supervise  the work of others, for example, in research teams or projects

Teamwork

  • Act as a team leader (new EIT executive group)
  • Develop productive working relationships with other members of staff
  • Co-ordinate the work of colleagues to ensure equitable access to resources and facilities

Pastoral Care

  • Deal with standard problems and help colleagues resolve their concerns about progress in EIT research projects

Initiative, Problem solving & Decision making

  • Assess, interpret and evaluate the outcomes of EIT research projects
  • Develop new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding
  • Resolve problems of meeting research objectives and deadlines
  • Develop ideas for generating income and promoting the research area
  • Decide on research programmes and methodologies, often in collaboration with FIW and EIT colleagues and subject to the approval of the head of the research programme EIT managerial group on fundamental issues

Planning & Managing Resources

  • Plan, co-ordinate and implement research programmes
  • Manage the use of research resources and ensure that effective use is made of them
  • Manage and monitor research budgets

Sensory, Physical and Emotional Demands

  • Balance the pressures of research and administrative demands and competing deadlines

Work Environment

  • Depending on area of work and level of training received, may be expected to conduct risk assessment and take responsibility for the health and safety of others
  • The role will involve travel within and possibly outside Europe.  Relevant risk assessments (based within CMU) will be undertaken by the employee.

Expertise

  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline  to develop research programmes and methodologies
  • Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
  • A good understanding of research methods, report writing and a broad knowledge of science related food and health
