Caretaker and Maintenance Porter

Location: Colchester

Salary: GBP17,222 - GBP18,659

3 month contract with shift patterns including some weekends.

Overall Role

Our client requires a Porter to undertake planned and reactive maintenance, repairs, cleaning and porterage duties as and when required within the buildings and grounds. You will be responsible for ensuring these present a clean and safe environment for all users.

Key Accountabilities

To carry out safety and security procedures for the College buildings and contents, including the routine and non-routine locking and unlocking of premises and grounds
To maintain appropriate standards of behaviour by students in all communal areas of the College's premises
To provide first aid assistance as necessary, and therefore become a trained first aider
To carry out Porter duties such as the movement of goods, fixtures and fittings, moving of furniture, setting out furniture for conferences and events
To undertake responsibilities in accordance with the College's incident management procedures and take immediate action in the event of emergencies such as fire, flood, snow and any other event to ensure operational continuity for the College
Assist with the cleaning of the Campus, ensuring removal of litter and provide support to the campus assistants in the absence of the regular cleaning supervisor
To carry out minor improvements, decorations, inspections and repairs joinery, plumbing electrical where qualified to do so, which also may require the use of small power tools
Ensure water services are maintained including repairs to pipes, taps, urinals and cisterns, clearing blockages and ensuring drains and gullies are kept clear
To ensure safety precautions are observed throughout the campus and ensure contractors work safely.
When necessary drive any Campus Vehicle, including the Mini buses (Conditional on passing a BSM minibus test)
Act as key holder for College sites for out-of-hours emergencies and respond to intruder or fire alarm activation
Work to promote and contribute to the College's Equal Opportunities Policy

To have recently undertaken a maintenance or security role within a large organisation
Good experience of building services and supplies
Sound knowledge of H&S in the workplace
First Aid qualified or willingness to undertake
Willingness to undertake the Minibus driver training and test
GCSE's Maths and English grade C or above/equivalent
Basic numeracy skills for checking delivery notes etc.
Good communication skills via email, face to face, and telephone
Able to lift, load, unload and carry substantial goods and furniture
Able to use Microsoft Office Packages
Able to participate in a callout, out of hours
