Do you like designing and making ‘things’? Have you got a ‘creative streak’?
This is a new role that we wish to create. Our engineering department is already well served by an exceptionally talented technician. The role of a technician in schools is typically about supporting the teaching staff and students in the preparation and delivery of practical lessons, overseeing health and safety, managing stock and materials, and maintaining equipment and machinery.
As a specialist engineering college, we are keen to support our students in developing their skills (designing and making things) and to provide them with opportunities for independent project work. The reason for creating this position is that we want to create more capacity for the team to work with individual students and with very small groups on these creative projects. Our vision is that both technicians within the department would end up spending a high proportion of the working day actually making things, helping students develop their skills in the process.
Lincoln UTC is a specialist college for science and engineering for students between the ages of 14 and 18. We are located in the centre of Lincoln in stunning premises which combine the architectural splendour of a beautiful historic building with state of the art modern laboratories and workshops. We are appreciably smaller than most secondary schools.
The atmosphere here at the UTC is warm, welcoming and supportive. Our students are well behaved, polite and respectful. They take pride in and look after their learning environment. In our recent Ofsted inspection (June 2019) the inspectors described the students’ behaviour in lessons and around the college campus as ‘impeccable’. The mutual trust which exists between staff and students is ‘remarkable’. Students respect the environment and all areas of the college are ‘immaculately kept’.
We are a small, tight-knit, friendly and supportive staff team (30 staff in total). The Ofsted inspectors judged staff morale to be ‘exceptionally high’. Staff work together … with each other and with students in a way that you don’t often find in schools. We are looking for somebody who wants to be part of a team and join our community.
