An exciting new opportunity for a Health & Safety Officer is required to join a stable and successful Thetford-based manufacturing firm on a permanent basis. Our client are a well-established business who design, manufacture and install HVAC equipment for the building services market.
Reporting to the General Manager and liaising with many other departmental Managers, this newly created role is a great chance to make a real difference to a busy manufacturing environment, and involve the review, development and implementation of the company's health and safety management systems.
The primary responsibilities within the role are the effective and thorough review of H&S Management systems in the company, developing, and implementing new processes as required. Ultimately though, you will be responsible for the safety of all staff, visitors, contractors to site, ensuring the company is operating within current health and safety legislation, particularly within the company's manufacturing workshop.
Other duties and responsibilities include:
* Review and develop all aspects of the company's Health and Safety Policy and activities and ensure that they are implemented consistently across the company to provide a safe workplace environment without risk to health.
* Monitor, evaluate and review existing, new and upcoming Health and Safety legislation and ensure that the company has systems and procedures in place to meet legal compliance.
* Work proactively with managers and other key staff to establish and maintain a programme of continuous improvement in the management of Health and Safety within their areas of responsibility, which includes conducting regular audits.
* Ensure that rigorous risk assessment and accident management systems are in place to enable all departments to undertake risk assessment processes to identify hazards and to ensure that appropriate control measures are in place. Ensuring the cooperation and commitment from all employees when producing the assessments is essential. Maintaining a central record of all risk assessments and their regular review of for all work equipment and operations.
* Produce Safe Working Procedures and discuss areas for improvement with relevant department managers and agree appropriate corrective action.
* Liaise with an Occupational Health Service to provide audiometry testing and lung function testing and maintain appropriate records.
* Provide all new employees to the company with a safety induction and manual handling training.
* Ensure that all accidents and 'near misses' are documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented and reported to the Health and Safety Committee meetings. Inform the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of accidents or incidents that require notification (RIDDOR).
* Undertake the planning and implementation of fire drills and other evacuation procedures.
* Ensure that appropriate records are maintained in compliance with legal requirements, e.g. COSHH, Fire Risk Assessment, Noise surveys and that necessary notices are displayed and reviewed.
* Ensure full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained.
* Ensure that safety inspections are carried out - power press, lifting equipment, LEV, air compressors, fire alarms, fire extinguishers and correctly reported and reported actions are followed up and closed out
Required skills and attributes are as follows:
* A solid background in Health and Safety within a manufacturing environment
* An up-to-date knowledge of general Health and Safety legislation within a manufacturing setting
* NEBOSH certification as a minimum
* A common-sense lead approach with an open and confident style; able to communicate with people at different levels from the factory floor, to Senior Management as well as visitors/contractors etc. the ability to enforce H&S guidelines to all levels of personnel within the company in an effective manner
* Excellent attention to detail at all times and a methodical nature
* Great IT skills, particularly with MS Office suite
