Job Title: Houseman and Gardener
Location: Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea

The Company:
The Estate extends over 25,000 acres and has an annual turnover of GBP19m. The land and property based enterprise include residential lettings, commercial lettings, property maintenance and development, farming, forestry, country sports, a hotel, a holiday park, beach and car parks. The operations centred on Holkham Hall include day visitors, catering, filing, outdoor events and concerts.
The Estate policy is to manage the location as a progressive commercial operation set within a thriving local community where rural values are upheld. The aim is to ensure the long-term prosperity of the Estate and of those who live and work on it.
The Role:
This role will work as part of the overall Gardens team but will have specific responsibility for providing gardening services to the farm on average working 4 days per week at farm and 1 day per week gardening on the wider estate. The role is also a Houseman for the farm to provide security and a range of household tasks to support Sarah, Countess of Leicester.
Main Responsibilities:
* To communicate regularly with Lady Leicester and her household team at Model Farm to ensure expectations are met and work is prioritised accordingly
* Planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ground cover and annual bedding, hedge cutting
* Lawn maintenance and cultivation
* The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery
* The use of mowers, strimmers and leaf blowers
* To cultivate the vegetable garden
* Maintenance and care of equipment including oil level checks and checking for damage
* To be aware of the Health and Safety requirements and carry out all duties in compliance with legislation
* To apply chemicals where appropriate
* To clean and maintain the hard surfaces around Model Farm and treat them when required
* To maintain sheds and greenhouse, ensuring that they are tidy and well kept
* To valet cars as required and undertake routine maintenance, to include checking oil, water and tyres. Ensure cars are serviced regularly and MOTs are current.
* To walk and feed dogs as required
* To replenish log baskets and lay fires as required
* To empty bins and look after waste recycling and compost as required
* To ensure Model Farm is kept secure at all times and respond to alarms
* To carry out internal maintenance jobs as required
* To seek assistance from the Property Maintenance team that cannot be addressed by the household team
* Any other duties that may be required. This is a flexible role that will often involve duties not listed above, including work outside standard working hours and standard working days
Key Requirements:
* Be hardworking, flexible, energetic and trustworthy
* Have a real passion for gardening and a strong knowledge of plants
* Have practical, hands-on garden experience, preferably within an Estate environment
* Have a qualification in Horticulture
* PA1/PA6 spray certificates
* Have a clean driving licence
* Have a commitment to work to the highest possible standard with excellent attention to detail
* Be good at taking direction but also be able to work under their own initiative
* Be able to work both in a team as well as stand-alone
You must have the right to live and work in the United Kingdom and have a full, clean driving licence. Weekend and Bank Holiday working will also be required.
