About us

East Devon is independently recognised as an outstanding place and so it follows that its council must also strive to be outstanding. Everything we do is aimed at ensuring that East Devon is a place that people want to live in, work in, visit and enjoy. Our ambition is to be an outstanding council which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment for East Devon, now and for future generations.

About the role

You will lead and co-ordinate the efforts of the StreetScene teams assigned to you to ensure ongoing and safe cleaning and maintenance of our public and open spaces. This involves co-ordinating our operatives to deal with everything from grounds maintenance and fly tipping to street/beach cleaning and supporting special events (festivals and carnivals). You will be responsible for ensuring your teams are equipped to carry out their roles (through allocation of appropriate resources and training) whilst working to budget and deadlines. You will also play a critical role in building and maintaining positive relations with various community stakeholders and elected members as well as motivating your multi-skilled teams and supporting them through continual change.

About you

Organised, efficient and inspiring, you’ll have a desire to deliver a StreetScene Operations service to exceed expectations. You will need to be qualified to NVQ level 3 in Management, hold a technical diploma in a relevant subject or have equivalent demonstrable experience. You must also have wide experience of supervising / leading a team of manual workers.

Experience of monitoring budgets, meeting deadlines, and ensuring health and safety standards are met is also essential, together with excellent communications skills and IT literacy. Arboriculture or horticultural experience would be a distinct advantage.

You must have the flexibility to occasionally work out of hours and participate in a weekend duty rota, and hold a current valid driving licence (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act) as travelling throughout the district in a Council vehicle is also a requirement of the post.
