An opportunity has arisen for a herd manager to join a team of four permanent staff with a split calving and expanding herd of 290 cows. This is a key leadership position in the team and is opportunity to step up by leading by example to the rest of the team. Candidates will need to demonstrate attention to detail within the herd and increase herd productivity from within a team culture. Candidates need to be able to think for themselves, motivate other team members around plus work alongside the farm owner.
The farm is 400 acres plus, 320 acres of grassland and the rest is wholecrop cereal/forage maize which is fed back to the cows. Forage maize is also bought in. The current main group is an autumn group of 220 Norwegian Red/Holstein cows, yielding 8,900 litres, on twice daily milking. Semi-total mixed ration feeding is practiced, with some parlour feeding. There is a spring calving herd of 70 cows which it envisaged growing to 200 cows of a Friesian type. Milking is through a new 25/50 Fulwood Swing-over herringbone milking parlour with automatic identification, Heat-Time heat detection, and auto segregation. Milking cows are in new cubicles, housed on sand and are in groups. Dry cows and pre-calver's are in straw yards as are youngstock.
The herd manager will be part of the milking team of four people, trim lame cows between visits of the hoof trimmer, and perform AI. This herd manager will need be proactive with fertility, taking a lead with herd health involving all team members
