Our current Lead Ranger is going on secondment to a senior post in the organisation and we're looking for an experienced and dynamic ranger to cover this role. With significant conservation improvements in progress at both the historic park and the wider estate, a large team of staff and volunteers, as well as over half a million visitors to inspire about nature and the outdoors, you'll need to bring all of your experience and energy to this job.

Dunham Massey is a 3,000-acre estate situated approximately 10 miles south of central Manchester and three miles south of Altrincham. Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, gave it to the National Trust in 1976 and today it attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. This elegant Georgian mansion, set within a magnificent 300 acre deer park and including one of Britain's finest winter gardens, is a very popular visitor attraction with over 100 staff and 600 volunteers and a busy and dynamic environment to work in. Within the park walls there is also a shop, caf??, restaurant and ice cream parlour. On the wider estate, there are 13 farms, 100 cottages and a golf course and the ranger team are heavily involved in activities on the wider estate as well as within the deer park. The house, garden and parkland hide many layers of history and have many stories to tell.

You'll have responsibility for deer management, tree management and a historic water mill. You'll work in partnership with property staff and our tenant farmers to support conservation initiatives on the estate and you'll have accountability for delivering the actions of our Park Conservation Management Plan. You'll lead a team of dedicated rangers, volunteer park guides and mill stewards to offer the highest standards of conservation and engage our visitors in the outdoors.

We are looking for

  • an experienced and enthusiastic leader of people with extensive knowledge of nature and the outdoors and experience of practical work in this area.
  • Experience of tree and deer management is highly desirable.
  • You'll have managed staff and volunteers previously, and
  • have experience of managing projects and organising work schedules.
  • We're looking for a highly organised, practical person who can also think strategically and plan for long-term goals.
