Job Description

The Product Safety Manager is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of product intrinsic safety management and engineering activities across various products relating to submarine combat systems. The primary role is to ensure that all products are fit for purpose from a safety perspective and compliant with relevant legislation.

This involves, but is not limited to, the following main responsibilities:

• The day to day product level safety management for the Project

• The production of product level safety case documentation

• Conducting risk management activities

• Management of interfaces with project stakeholders

• To provide the MoD with the assurance that safety is being appropriately managed.

• Managing monthly internal and Customer facing Product Safety Reviews and Working Groups

• Maintenance of interfaces with project stakeholders

• To advise on related product standards, statutory regulations and any restrictions with which the project must comply

• To review, the quality and sufficiency of evidence to satisfy identified safety risks / issues and provide endorsement for proposed ALARP positions

• Collation and co-ordination of safety related documentation and reports

• Organisation and facilitation of Hazard Identification (HazID) & Hazard Identification & Analysis (HIA) workshops using Hazard Guidewords

• Creation and maintenance of product hazard logs

• Review of supplier safety case documentation and hazards and risks contained therein

• Co-ordination of Hazard Transfer between Hazard Management Systems

• Provision of safety advice to the Design Community

• To undertake review of products designs, in accordance with applicable product design standards & legislation (e.g. EU harmonised standard BS EN (phone number removed) (60950))

• Review of Learning from Experience (LfE).

The Individual

Qualification in product electrical, mechanical or systems engineering, ideally with a safety bias (or closely related discipline)

• Demonstrable product intrinsic safety engineering experience

• Stakeholder management experience

• knowledge of Submarine product intrinsic safety management / engineering obtained by appropriate education and or training

• practical experience of product intrinsic safety management / engineering tasks in accordance with DEF STAN 00-56

• in-depth user domain knowledge of the Submarine Combat System IT equipment operation and maintenance obtained by appropriate training and experience

• in-depth subject matter knowledge (SME) of the Submarine Combat System IT equipment

• knowledge of current Legislation and standards applicable to electro-technical equipment (e.g. EU harmonised standard BS EN (phone number removed)
