Supportability Engineer

Location:  Devonport

Company: Babcock

Have you ever wondered what it takes to support our nuclear deterrent?

The Dreadnought Project is currently looking for candidates with HND/HNC or Degree level qualifications in any of the following subjects:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics

We are currently looking to recruit the following roles at our sites in Bristol (Keynsham)

  • Senior Supportability Engineers (Band 6) (Bristol/Devonport/Barrow)
  • Supportability Engineers (Band 5) (Bristol/Barrow)

The Dreadnought Programme

The Dreadnought programme, which has recently received full parliamentary approval, will deliver a new generation of submarines to carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent. It is the largest programme in Defence with a budget of £34 billion confirmed in the Strategic Defence and Security Review.

Babcock – Our Involvement

We are charged with ensuring that the Dreadnought submarines, and the support arrangements that we and others provide, are capable of ensuring the delivery of the UK’s Continuous At-Sea Deterrent patrols.

Ensuring that our nuclear deterrent is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year is a huge task and one that Babcock has a major part in delivering for the current Vanguard-class platforms. We have three primary functions within the Dreadnought Programme:

  • Influencing the design of the submarine – maximising ease of support in service;
  • Developing an in-service Support Solution which demonstrably satisfies requirements for availability and cost;
  • Ensuring the submarine can be maintained within safe operating limits.

About You

An excellent communicator, you will be able to articulate complex arguments for a wide range of stakeholders to understand.  You will be able to demonstrate that you can drive issues to completion.

Preferably degree qualified (or HND/HNC with relevant experience) you will be committed to continuing your professional development. ONC will be considered and an appropriate training scheme identified.

Project Management experience or qualifications would be advantageous as the role requires the delivery of documentation to time and budget.

Security

Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements.  You must be a sole UK national and hold, or be capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.

The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
