Job description

Exscientia is seeking a Molecular Receptor Pharmacologist to join its drug discovery team in Oxford.

Key responsibilities

The key responsibilities involve the following:

  • discovering new leads and delivering candidate molecules for novel GPCR projects;
  • leading the prosecution of GPCR cell based assays in 96 and/or 384 well format, ensuring highest levels of quality control;
  • collaborating with computational chemists to create novel combined experimental & computational processes of GPCR ligand discovery;
  • developing novel GPCR screening technologies to detect G-protein/arrestin bias across majority of G-proteins;
  • designing and development robust, biosensor screens for GPCR/G-protein complexes;
  • executing high-throughput GPCR-G protein bias screens;
  • providing expert opinion and troubleshooting on GPCR assay design robustness to internal and external collaborators;
  • taking responsibility for quality assurance in the screening process;
  • carrying out data analysis and statistical modelling to enable hit selection;
  • keeping appropriate experimental records, helping oversee data integrity and confidentiality;
  • assisting in the production of high quality reports supporting milestones and deliverables; and
  • working closely with the bioinformatics team to select new biological targets.

Essential Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess the following qualification

  • PhD in GPCR pharmacology and screening.

Essential Skills & Experience

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience

  • demonstrable experience of performing ligand discovery for GPCR/G-protein bias ligands receptors through high throughput screening preferable in cell-based systems;
  • competency in cell culture and an understanding or direct experience of GPCR/G-protein profiling and assay techniques and other GPCR signalling screening methods;
  • minimum of three years of relevant molecular biology and screening experience of GPCR molecular pharmacology, demonstrable experience of training in molecular pharmacology in a specialist GPCR laboratory and of working in the pharma/biotech industry or in an academic drug discovery setting;
  • demonstrable experience in data analysis and QC of receptor pharmacology screens;
  • demonstrable experience in the evaluation interpretation and reporting of data in accordance with high quality scientific practice;
  • demonstrable experience of managing multi-site collaborative screening initiatives;
  • demonstrable evidence of developing novel GPCR screening technologies experience by authoring high impact publications or patents;
  • a demonstrable ability to plan and work in an organise manner and to standard operating procedures;
  • proactive, productive and ability to work effectively in teams;
  • flexible and able to multi-task with a commitment to quality and scientific rigour;
  • excellent project management skills and problem solving and trouble-shooting capabilities;
  • familiarity with software for data capture, analysis and presentation;
  • highly motivated with a track record of success; and
  • working proficiency and communication skills in verbal and written English.
