Summary Set within the Surrey Hills AONB the stunning Leith Hill property comprises ancient woodland, parkland, farmland, heath land, formal gardens and the iconic Leith Hill Tower. Of the 350 hectare area, much has SSSI designation and there are exciting plans to create further priority habitat within the estate.
What it's like to work here Leith Hill Place, childhood home of the famous English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams sits in a prominent position on the greensand ridge overlooking the weald near the village of Coldharbour in Surrey. Opened to the public for the first time in 2013, Leith Hill Place exudes an intimacy and informality that attracts almost 20,000 visitors pa. Stories of Vaugham Williams and his famous relatives, the Wedgwood family and Charles Darwin are waiting to be told. A house of many possibilities for the future.
What you'll be doing As Area Ranger for Leith Hill you will be responsible for the day to day management of the property, with a significant focus on our successful volunteer programme. As visitors are very important to us you will also ensure a welcoming and inspirational experience at the property and have an aptitude for communicating the importance of the conservation work we carry out.
With responsibility for the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, you will be building on your previous experience in similar roles. You will continue to build relationships in the local community, work on a programme of events and guided walks, and ensure continuity of monitoring and surveying at the property.
In this role you will be expected to work some weekends and bank holidays at this property and at others within the Surrey Hills portfolio, and there will be an occasional expectation to attend evening meetings. The full role profile is available on our website.

Who we're looking for As part of the Leith Hill & Holmwood Common team, you will be both a team player and a self-starter with the motivation to achieve great things. You'll value a one team approach between Leith Hill and Holmwood Common and take an active interest in the wider Surrey Hills portfolio.
To deliver this role successfully, you will need to
  • Be competent with machinery and equipment as well as having the relevant certificates required
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors Hold a diploma/NVQ or higher in a countryside or environmental discipline
  • Be able to engage with visitors to ensure they understand the value of our work
  • Work safely, with experience of risk assessment and compliance with safety procedures
  • Have excellent communication skills including public presentation, composing letters and developing literature
  • Have a proven track record (minimum 2 years' experience) in a similar role
  • Possess knowledge and experience of woodland and/or heath land management
  • Have empathy with, and significant experience of, working with volunteers Hold a First Aid certification and a full UK driving licence
