Please note this is a part time position. Salary of GBP17,500 (full time equivalent) will be pro-rata to GBP14,189 (30 hours per week).

This is a fixed-term contract for a duration of 6 months.

Hours of work;

2 week shift pattern, including two Saturdays to be worked per month.

Flexibility to commence work at 8.30am and finish at 6.00pm as required.

The Role

To provide a high quality, individual service to library customers.

Job Purpose

To welcome all library customers and identify their individual needs, actively seeking to meet those needs to provide a quality service and to enable customers to make full use of the facilities available. To interact with customers throughout their visit as appropriate.

Key Accountabilities

• To provide assistance, support and instruction to customers using information communications technology (ICT) equipment and software.

• To answer telephone enquiries from customers promptly (including operation of a switchboard where appropriate), providing accurate information - including referral to other services as appropriate - in a timely fashion.

• To oversee, and provide customers with guidance in, the use of self-service equipment.

• To comply with the individual responsibilities for Health Safety & Welfare in the workplace, including ensuring safeguarding children, in accordance with work role.

• Undertake all stock circulation and management procedures, including sorting, shelving and tidying of returned material, reservations, fines, membership and similar activities.

• To assist with promotional activities (both inside and outside the library), marketing and display work, and to contribute to the achievement of agreed targets for income generation.

• To assist in the compilation of statistical returns, and any other general administrative duties.

• To act as key holder, lock and unlock, as necessary.

• To contribute to the local delivery of the Service Plan.

• To be responsible for self-development, and to participate in training and development.

• To carry out other such duties as may be required.

• Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and 2 Saturdays per month.

• Ability to undertake the physical aspects of the job, including shelving and counter work.

• European Computer Driving Licence or NVQ Level 2 in IT, or demonstrable ICT skills and a willingness to undertake a European Computer Driving Licence and achieve full ECDL accreditation.

• GCSEs - or equivalent in a range of subjects: Maths and English at grades A-C.

• Relevant NVQ or equivalent qualification, or demonstrably equivalent ability.

• Working with the public in a people-oriented service.

• An understanding of the need to deliver a service that has our customers as the focus of activities.

• Awareness of what Essex Libraries currently delivers to users.

Qualification certificates should be brought to interview.
