Job Introduction

We're looking for a talented Live News Journalist to join our new site Berkshire Live, which is due to launch this spring.

The site aims to be the go to place for news, what's on and traffic and travel for the county, plus the home for coverage of Reading FC.

Berkshire Live will also celebrate the area's different communities.

Berkshire Live follows Reach's launch of Lancs Live in February and successful county-wide operations in Kent, Essex, Somerset, Gloucestershire and elsewhere across the UK.

We are Reach because it's what we do.

Every day our newsbrands - national and regional, in print and online - reach millions of people up and down the country. We are the UK's largest news publisher, with influential national newsbrands such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Record, and more than 100 distinguished regional titles.

Our brands have a long heritage of being trusted sources of news and information, with our editorial conviction and high standards of journalism providing audiences with timely information and opinion across multiple platforms.

Last year we sold 540 million newspapers, and our network of over 70 websites provide 24/7 coverage of news, sport and showbiz stories, viewed by 110m unique browsers every month.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high quality, thoroughly researched, accurate and well-written digital content packages on a daily basis to agreed deadlines as directed by the newsdesk
  • Write content in a way which engages and drives digital audience
  • Provide live coverage of news events for live blogs and breaking news as and when required
  • Shoot video, audio and pictures using company mobile phone when out on jobs
  • Build strong contacts for story-gathering within local communities
  • Be active on social media, in line with Reach policies, to build audiences and communities and ensure that content links are regularly shared on social platforms
  • Ensure content is written with strong search engine optimisation in mind
  • Possess a thorough, up-to-date knowledge of media law and PCC Code

The Ideal Candidate
  • As well as a sharp news sense you'll have an appreciation of what content works well online and how our audience wants to engage with it.
  • You'll also be someone ready to step up to run the newsdesk when required.
  • As part of the Berkshire Live team you will need to be a versatile reporter with excellent writing and digital skills and an understanding of SEO.
  • You'll have the opportunity to cover a range of stories from across the county, from Reading FC to Reading Festival and Royal Ascot to the latest breaking news.
  • And you'll be as confident using social media to find and promote your stories as you are sourcing or filming video, meeting a contact and getting the inside track on a story to lead the website.
  • Ideally you'll have a journalist qualification including shorthand or two years relevant experience.
  • There will also be some evening and weekend working and a full driver's licence is essential.
