Job Introduction

WalesOnline is looking for a Content Editor, Social Media and New Platforms to join their team in either Cardiff or Swansea.

The successful candidate will promote excellence across our social media and audio platforms by working with reporters on content ideas and delivery to ensure strong growth in these areas. They will have oversight of overall performance against agreed social media KPIs, and understand how these relate to the delivery of key overall metrics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with reporters to devise, produce, publish and promote outstanding content that will be particularly successful on social media
  • Oversee social media platforms on a day-to-day basis, and work with the head of audience to devise and deliver the overall social media strategy
  • Have a detailed understanding of how and where different audiences can be found and recruited, and how this translates to content decisions
  • Compile and communicate detailed social media analytics that contribute to ever-improving decision-making around content delivery
  • Be the leader in the newsroom on innovative social media storytelling (native videos, Instagram stories, experimenting with tweets and post styles) and encourage the same behaviour and skills in others
  • Drive the production and development of podcasting within the newsroom, and take responsibility for ensuring standards are consistently high in this area
  • Quickly and effectively recognise and exploit audience opportunities arising from social media
  • Identify best practice and strong ideas from elsewhere in the industry and apply them in ways that help WalesOnline progress
  • Encourage best practice among reporters around engagement: building communities, being involved in conversations, being accessible to readers, finding audience
  • Take on more general newsdesk responsibilities as required
  • Quality, accuracy, legal and IPSO compliance
  • Ensure content carries the correct tags, in accordance with agreed co

The Ideal Candidate
  • Instinctive understanding of what makes a great story and why people want to read them
  • A passion for podcasts and understanding what makes them great
  • First class digital, social media and communication skills
  • A track record of producing great stories and getting the highest possible audience for them
  • Understand digital publishing, including SEO and analytics
  • Video and audio skills, including editing
  • Up-to-date legal and IPSO code knowledge
