We are recruiting Helpline Advisors to join the UK-wide Modern Slavery Helpline and resource centre, based in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. You would be joining a growing, supportive and committed team to assist modern slavery victims and those who may come into contact with potential victims.

Helpline Advisors are outward-facing posts that field calls, emails, reports from victims in dangerous situations, from the public reporting suspected incidents of modern slavery, from businesses looking for information, and from frontline professionals needing prompt, informed technical advice.

The Helpline Advisor post is a challenging and diverse role. Successful candidates must be strong learners and able to maintain subject matter expertise in a quickly-changing field. Experience of working in the field of modern slavery within civil society, local government, or law enforcement, or experience of working in a call centre environment dealing with vulnerable individuals would be an advantage. Helpline Advisors must remain calm, even in distressing situations, employing de-escalation tactics to emotionally heightened callers, even when hearing of severe abuse. The ability to understand, build trust and work effectively with vulnerable individuals suffering consequences of trauma is critical.

Helpline Advisors are required to be motivated and flexible, able to think on their feet, assess risk, make decisions, ensure cases are actioned wisely and timely – listening for risk factors or indicators of exploitation and altering responses accordingly.

No two calls are the same. Successful Helpline Advisors are able to receive new incoming information, critically assess it and offer bespoke solutions, quickly. Helpline Advisors must also be able to work both independently and collaboratively, showing high levels of resourcefulness and the ability to consistently find or create solutions.

The Helpline works closely as a team. Successful applicants must be able to communicate efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed to brief colleagues regarding situations, identifying relevant and time-sensitive factors.

You will be required to work weekends, bank holidays and evenings to provide 24/7, 365-day support on a rotating basis. We are mainly looking for full-time advisors; however, part-time roles will also be considered. Candidates interested in working nights or weekends only are welcomed.

Full and ongoing training and supervision is provided.

Applications are due on the 18th March 2019 with training to likely begin in May 2019. Consideration will be given to applicants completing educational courses, allowing time to finish exams. All Helpline Advisors must be able to attend initial training, which lasts approximately 4 weeks full-time. (Placements are subject to satisfactory references and DBS check if required and completion of induction).
