Breaking News Reporter

Working with our content desk, our fast-paced live breaking news team runs our live breaking news, traffic and travel blogs, posting updates, interacting with readers via social media, and writing and sharing breaking stories quickly, accurately and with flair.

It's an exciting role in a dynamic newsroom at the forefront of digital publishing.

We are Reach because it's what we do.

Every day our newsbrands - national and regional, in print and online - reach millions of people up and down the country. We are the UK's largest news publisher, with influential national newsbrands such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Record, and more than 100 distinguished regional titles including the Chronicle, Journal and Sunday Sun in the North East.

Our brands have a long heritage of being trusted sources of news and information, with our editorial conviction and high standards of journalism providing audiences with timely information and opinion across multiple platforms.

Last year we sold 540 million newspapers, and our network of over 70 websites provide 24/7 coverage of news, sport and showbiz stories, viewed by 110m unique browsers every month.

Key Responsibilities

* Curate, copy taste, write and directly publish authoritative and accurate breaking news content (including words, pictures and video) in daily live blogs
* Ensure content lines from live blogs are shared quickly, accurately and engagingly on social media platforms and via app push notifications
* Generate breaking news content as commissioned by the newsdesk, writing standalone articles to accompany live coverage as directed
* Manage and run dedicated live coverage of news events as and when required
* Source and secure permission to use third-party content such as video, audio and pictures to accompany breaking news stories and for use in live blogs
* Reply promptly, politely and helpfully to questions and information coming in via social media regarding live news incidents and developing stories
* Maintain an engaging social media presence including sharing content links daily in a way which helps enhance brand and supports achievement of audience targets

The Ideal Candidate

Ideally, you'll be a senior journalist with NCTJ-accredited qualifications including news writing, media law and 100wpm shorthand, but we will also consider applications from trainees who have NCTJ prelims.

You'll need to be creative, energetic and able to work at pace and think on your feet.

Demonstrable experience of writing breaking news for online audiences is essential, as is a keen instinct for grabbing readers' attention through engaging headlines.

An understanding of SEO and digital content management systems is desirable.

The role involves working early and late shifts and weekends on a rota basis, so flexibility is also key.
