THE OPPORTUNITY:

The main purpose of the job is to make it easier for online users to do business with the British Council through its main website, . This role edits high-traffic sections of the British Council's public website in line with its communications strategy and in collaboration with the Lead Digital Communications Manager and partners in the business units. This entails maintaining and optimising all sections within the Digital Communications team's direct remit, including 'Our organisation', 'Jobs', 'Study and work abroad' and others. The role helps site editors in other teams maintain editorial standards and implement URL and accessibility policies across the site. As the role sits within a small team of editors, the postholder is expected to help with cover on social media and other platforms within the team's remit, especially during busier periods.

Communications is part of the Marketing Centre of Excellence, leading global strategy and plans across internal and change communications, media and PR, crisis communications, events management and digital communications.

MAIN DUTIES:

Carry out content updates on corporate sections of britishcouncil.org

Improve public perceptions of the British Council and reduce reputational and operational risk by:

  • updating or removing out-of-date and inaccurate content, in line with house style

  • liaising with those responsible for the content on different sections of the website and supporting them through expert editing. Corporate sections include 'Our organisation', 'Study and work abroad', and all others that don't fall within one particular business unit or regional remit

  • managing user testing with UX designer where appropriate

  • selecting and editing relevant photography, in line with house style

  • optimising content for search engines and thereby make it easier for users to find our offer.

    Oversee improvement of content on British Council's corporate website

    Redesign and streamline the content of by:

  • supporting editors to publish useful, timely, searchable, non-duplicate and relevant content

  • checking work to help editors meet our brand guidelines and tone - especially ahead of user testing rounds

  • overseeing the correction of broken links, orphaned pages, URL policy issues, redirects and other content issues that can affect the operation of the site

  • overseeing the number of users who have access on .org, managing the list, identifying training needs with partners in the business units and supporting them in meeting those

  • managing all user testing on the site, in collaboration with UX designer.

    Equality, inclusion and diversity (EDI)

    Make British Council's global corporate website britishcouncil.org more inclusive by:

  • identifying shortfalls through accessibility user testing and other audits based on accessibility standards

  • drawing up plan to deal with content-specific shortfalls within a certain timeframe, signed off by Lead Digital Communications Manager and accessibility expert in Digital team

  • implementing plan.

    Support the Digital Communications team in content creation and social media cover

    Support the team by:

  • acting as a second pair of editorial eyes on British Council Voices articles and video to collaboratively improve the quality of content, attract readers and subscribers, and reduce risk on the British Council's global corporate digital channels

  • taking over edits and covering on social media while other team members are on leave or in training

  • being prepared to join the on-call rota (see 'role requirements' below for further details).

    ABOUT YOU

    • Excellent editing skills in English, with strong and consistent attention to detail
    • Ability to influence both internal and external colleagues
    • Knowledge of SEO and accessibility standards
    • Ability to plan and organise: can work to publishing deadlines and project plan
    • Ability to analyse and put data into reports with necessary context and insights, using Google Analytics, and Excel or Google Sheets
    • Knowledge of photo editing and content management systems
