Glyndebourne is seeking someone with experience of managing the day to day running of a large scale repertory stage department to support our objective of creating world-class transformative opera.

As Head of Stage you will be responsible for the management of all planning, logistics and scheduling of the Stage Department for all aspects of Glyndebourne's work, both at Glyndebourne and in other venues worldwide. Working closely with 4 Stage Supervisors and 2 Head Fly Technicians, to be responsible for the technical stage staff to deliver the highest standards of all relevant technical and logistical aspects of our productions.

With a background in technical theatre, you will have strong management and leadership skills to manage a complex stage schedule with a large team of permanent and seasonal staff.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Manage the effective day to day running of the Stage Department, resources and staff, ensuring high production standards to realise the creative vision
  • Manage Glyndebourne's scenery stores, onsite and offsite, to ensure the most productive use of storage space, keeping accurate records, and ensure safe working environments.
  • Provide and support a structured method of communication between team members and from within the Stage Department to other relevant parts of the organisation.
  • Work with the Technical Coordinator in relation to Glyndebourne productions for hire, and oversee transport requirements as necessary.
  • Develop and support maintenance plans for all stage equipment and infrastructure with relevant Stage Department staff.
  • In conjunction with other technical departments, plan the most effective and efficient way of realising the artistic schedule.
  • Assess, develop and implement, in conjunction with the Technical Director, a long term development plan for the Stage Department and the Theatre.
  • Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with Stage Department staff, supporting and advising as and when necessary, to ensure the smooth running of the stage area at all times.
  • Ensure high levels of professional and operational standards of performance, including meaningful performance appraisal and personal development to ensure necessary skills and competence within the department
  • In conjunction with the Technical Director, manage and be accountable for the Stage Department budgets (salaries, logistics, materials, maintenance, etc).
  • Ensure that the recruitment, employment and working practices of all Stage Department staff are within Glyndebourne's Policies and Procedures, including the BECTU agreement
  • Ensure the highest level of Health & Safety management across operations and ensure that all staff are adequately trained.
  • Participate as required by the Technical Director, in the negotiations and operational working with BECTU representatives.
  • Carry out any other duties related to the post as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Excellent knowledge of stagecraft
  • Previous experience within repertoire opera or theatre
  • Excellent technical skills and knowledge of current stage equipment and production practise
  • Excellent People Management and Leadership skills
  • Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing
  • Proven experience of planning and scheduling staff and resources within a unionised environment
  • Good logistics and project management skills
  • Effective resource management and budget management
  • Good computer skills in a range of software, including Microsoft Office, Google environment.

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of CAD skills to a recognised industry standard
  • Clean driving licence
  • Completed training - IOSH, COSHH, Forklift, IPAF, CDM
  • Recognised project management training

Hours, Salary & Benefits

We can offer a salary dependent on experience. Salaries are reviewed annually on 1st January.

The contractual hours of work are 39 per week. However, you would be expected to work additional hours including some evenings and weekends during the rehearsal and performance periods.

We offer 33 days / 6.6 weeks holiday per year including public holidays.
