About the role

This role sits in Route Services, a business area that has been created to supply services to the routes in the safest, most cost-efficient and effective way, and enables them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.

Working in the Route Services IT (RSIT) Team, you will provide our customers with smart technology for the railway of today, designing fit-for-purpose and innovative solutions. Your vital work will help to manage the day-to-day running of our vast IT estate, from safety critical systems maintenance to hardware provision, supporting thousands of employees every day.

As a Project Manager, you will lead in the end to end delivery of specific projects with the view to save costs, time and achieve maximum quality where possible. You will play a key role in leading teams and suppliers as well as working closely with your peers in a collaborative work environment.

Key Accountabilities

What will you be doing?

  • Driving projects forward to achieve optimum delivery of outputs including appropriate planning, structuring and sequencing tasks and activities.
  • Leading the project delivery team and oversees suppliers, dependencies, achievements, and risks and issues in accordance with our standards and guidelines.
  • Reviewing project delivery budget and resourcing, driving governance arrangements to support appropriate reporting.
  • Mitigating risk by working with the business, engaging with stakeholders to agree common understanding to reduce risk.
  • Maintaining relationships with key customers, making sure effective and robust communication plans are agreed and in place.
  • Implementing quality and efficiency improvement initiatives for the project supporting lean delivery.
  • Supporting business transformation programmes and helps drive delivery performance improvements across the project.
  • Leading stakeholders within the project team to successfully meet the project deliverables.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Do you meet the following criteria?

Essential

You will need to have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Experience in leading project management and delivery
  • Proven track record in delivering successful, complex IT projects with an element of business change
  • Significant knowledge of project management principles, methods, techniques, tools and emerging trends
  • Proven experience in management of customer expectations, senior stakeholders and developing strong relationships across the business
  • Strong leadership skills, motivating and inspiring confidence in others
  • High levels of flexibility, adaptability and broad thinking
  • Proven track record within supplier management and commercial acumen
  • Knowledge and experience of applying a range of delivery/ development life cycles, e.g. Waterfall, Agile, Iterative
  • Strong financial management skills including quality forecasting

Desirable

Ideally you will have some of these, but they are not essential:

  • Knowledge of/experience in the UK rail industry or equivalent
  • Formal Programme/Project Management qualifications (e.g. APM/P - Certified Project Manager, Prince 2)
