The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £32,236 - £39,609 per annum​.

Applications are invited for the post of Mechanical Designer in the mechanical and thermal engineering group at The Mullard Space Science Laboratory of University College London. MSSL is based in the Surrey Hills near Dorking in Surrey. The role is to support design, manufacture and assembly of instrumentation for either laboratory use or space flight. It involves working with mechanical engineers, other design engineers and workshop technicians. A positive outlook and the ability to work in a team with clear deadlines are important. The post holder will work within project teams to assist the development, build and test of instrument or subsystems for the laboratory's space projects. The work carried out will support either instrument development during the study phase of space programmes, fulfil instrument design requirements during the build phase or support mechanical test programmes. Other duties would include: working within project teams to gain an understanding of the design requirements and mechanical interfaces; the ability to assess the feasibility of a proposed design by evaluating different concepts; support instrument testing.

The post is funded for 2 years in the first instance.

A Higher National Certificate in mechanical design or equivalent training is a requirement and a good understanding of workshop practices and material capabilities (completion of a recognised apprenticeship would be seen as an advantage). The successful candidate would require experience in creating and maintaining CAD models and file,create and interpret engineering drawings. He/she would also require mechanical design experience and a proven track record of manufactured designs.
