Our Glasgow team is recruiting for an experienced candidate to take on sub-editing duties here within our busy newsroom.
The successful candidate will be responsible for editing news, features, magazine and commercial articles and pages primarily for print products, ensuring the content is well written, accurate, balanced, legally sound, entertaining and informative. As our print and digital desks integrate you will be required to work across all our titles and platforms.

- Ensure the typography, grammar and spelling in news and features articles for print and digital products are correct and stories fit the space allocated on the page.
- Edit and rewrite copy from staff, agencies and other sources, ensuring the stories are easy to read, factual, clear, balanced, entertaining and informative.
- Write accurate, and entertaining headlines and captions.
- Gather content from a variety of sources to create articles, where necessary, under the guidance of senior colleagues.
- Ensure stories are as up to date as possible by incorporating breaking developments after the articles have left the content desk.
- Ensure stories are legally sound, complying with the laws of defamation and contempt of court, and do not contravene the IPSO Editor's Code of Practice. Be capable of spotting potential legal and IPSO problems and raising them with senior staff.
- Ensure the papers' and websites' style and policies are adhered to, particularly on political stories.
- Be involved in the creative process of putting the newspaper together, consulting with the Duty Editor and the Production Editor on ideas for the presentation of pages and stories, including suggesting headlines, story angles and picture selection.
- Handle pages containing several stories and delegate work on those to other colleagues.
- Demonstrate competent decision-making skills, particularly when working on late-night and early-morning shifts where senior staff may not be available to advise.
The Ideal Candidate
Must demonstrate the highest level of journalistic skills, initiative and sound judgment.
Extensive experience of sub-editing news and features content in a busy newspaper environment.
Possess the ability to turn complicated facts and events into easy-to-read, informative, well-written stories and features.
Ability to write accurate, attention-grabbing headlines.
A detailed knowledge of Scottish law in relation to the media, in particular, defamation, contempt of court, the privacy laws and familiarity with IPSO Editor's Code of Practice.
Demonstrate a sound knowledge of current affairs, particularly within Scotland but also for the UK and internationally.
Demonstrate a sound grasp of the political and moral stance of the titles and to identify and develop stories accordingly.
Expected to display a high level of initiative and creativity by suggesting ideas for stories to improve the content of the paper.
An ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure, particularly when dealing with big breaking news stories.
Ability to summarise complex facts and issues into easy to understand content without losing impact or sight of key issues.
An ability to work as part of a team, with the confidence and competence to delegate to peer colleagues.
Competent in the use of newspaper content management systems and Adobe InDesign and InCopy.
Competent in the writing of web-friendly headlines using best practices in search engine optimisation.
