Applications Engineer, Imaging, Machine Vision, Optics
GBP30,000- GBP40,000 + Benefits, DOE
Surrey
My client is a well-respected engineering distribution company specialised in both optics and machine vision components, systems and solutions for science and industry. They are the market leading distribution business in their areas. The UK and Ireland business was launched in 2004 and has a reputation for quality products and comprehensive selection, intelligent service and being at the forefront of new developments and innovation in imaging.
The business distributes imaging products and components from the world's leading optics and imaging manufacturers. Examples of typical products include vision and inspection systems, lasers, led illumination, speciality lenses, cameras, high capability cabling, camera link inputs, related software applications, industrial computers, and more. The business goes significantly beyond distribution. They have developed associated proprietary software applications in house, and undertake a high volume of technical consultancy work relating to industry and scientific applications for their products. This can often involve feasibility studies, design, process planning or end to end outsourced project work which is undertaken in their onsite laboratory. Finally the business also deliver specialist training sessions on site to engineers and scientists on various software applications and any associated hardware/ imaging tools and are seen as experts and leaders in best practice and getting the most functionality out of technology.
Clients are varied. The business works with clients large and small including leaders in field in automotive, aviation, electronics, printing, R&D, factory automation, food and pharmaceutical. If imaging and optics can be used in the setting they are probably doing work in that area already.
I am recruiting for an applications engineer to join their UK business within the technical division. The role would suit an experienced engineer who wants to move into a varied customer facing role but still very technical. You will be someone who has some practical work exposure to optics, imaging or machine vision technology in a manufacturing context that you can build on in this role. The role is multifaceted and every week is different, and will give you exposure to every industry the business work within and many different technologies within and relating to imaging. The technology is already used in an incredible variety of applications and use is still growing very quickly.
Applications engineers focus on projects the technical division of the business would consider medium or larger sized. Projects will be both pre-sales and post-sales but in this role there is a bigger focus on pre-sales in this role. This can include on site consultations, demonstrations, and following technical feasibility studies if appropriate. This will also include trades shows. Although this role will be majority office based there will be regular travel to client site, mainly in the UK & Ireland but also further afield. Most trips will be one or two days in length and longer hauls will be very rare.
You don't need to have necessarily worked as an applications engineer before, we are open to other types of engineers, from various manufacturing backgrounds moving into this role. However to emphasise applications engineering work is very consultative, engineers need to be able to understand why and how the technology is being used and the context of the setting in order to advise how to use in best way, but also how to manage people from external parties, keeping them interested and engaged whilst also managing expectations.
Post sales work is varied. This could include configuration work, coding including embedded software, and practical hands on work which could involve some design, prototyping and testing. There will be some installations work but this tends to be uncommon. There will also be some technical support work which is shared with all other member of the technical teams.
The company deliver training and once you have been with the business for a certain amount of time and built up your knowledge you would become the in house expert in certain specific areas and be delivering training sessions. Training experience is not required but you will need to be someone who can work to be able to deliver training sessions confidently to small groups of professionals.
Work is collaborative, with regular work with the sales and business functions in the UK as well as the technology teams in Germany.
Duties:
-Pre sales projects including feasibility studies and product and software demonstrations
-Post sales projects liaison with customers and suppliers, consultative problem solving, configuration work (including some coding), installations.
-Hands on technical engineering work as part of projects including design, prototyping and testing.
-Delivery of technical projects on time and to budget and keeping clients, partners and colleagues appraised of progress.
-Accurate record keeping and documentation.
-Develop comprehensive understanding of full products range and industry applications.
-Develop specialism in one or two technical product or software areas; working towards becoming in house expert in area.
-Delivering training sessions in "in house expert" area as appropriate.
-Attendance of trade shows, meeting with both suppliers and clients.
Requirements:
-2-10 years' experience in an engineering role within or having significant exposure to a manufacturing environment. This could be as a process engineer, manufacturing engineer, applications engineer, electronics design engineer, embedded software engineer, project engineer or pre sales engineer.
- Some exposure, indirect or direct, to imaging, optics, machine vision or related. Direct exposure is preferred.
-Bachelor's or master's degree in any engineering course subject.
-Previous coding experience is required. This can be in any language, some preference given to the C languages and Python.
-Engaging personality. Able to comfortably communicate about technical concepts, functionality and processes. Able to listen and ask questions to uncover true problems and any relevant context.
- Able to plan, work through stages and complete small and medium sized technical projects both independently and with team members and external parties. Able to meet agreed project timelines and manage expectations where appropriate.
- Client facing experience is preferred but not essential. Where there is no client facing experience we will need to see evidence of engaging with third parties and intercompany relationships.
-Able to work collaboratively with both clients, supplier manufacturers and internal colleagues in both UK, Germany and occasionally other European offices.
