Team Overview 

The global communications industry is continuing to change at breakneck speed. The Market Intelligence team is the source of critical information and insight within Ofcom, providing data and analysis on the communication industries. It sits within the newly-formed Strategy and Research Group and provides first class analysis of UK communications market developments that serve as the evidence base for Ofcom’s policy and regulatory work. We work collaboratively with other Ofcom teams and with external stakeholders to deliver Ofcom’s objectives. 

Purpose of the Role 

We are looking for an Associate to join us for six months starting in February in full or part-time capacity. The role is ideal for someone who wants to progress their career within Ofcom, contribute to the first-ever online report, strengthen their expertise in the TV sector, and be a leading contributor to the BBC Performance Report. Those interested should have curiosity for all things broadcasting, a willingness to work in (or learn) Excel, PowerBI and be comfortable with drafting analysis. The Market Intelligence team provides a truly empowering and collaborative environment where everyone holds ownership of their projects from Graduate to Principal, allowing colleagues to shape the direction of the project. 

Requirements of the Role 

- Play a leading role in Ofcom’s assessment of the BBC’s performance 
- Contribute to the first-ever online report, which will analyse UK’s consumers’ internet use and supply-side dynamics 
- Liaise with the BBC to ensure we have everything we need to accurately measure the BBC’s performance and fully understand the data they provide us with 
- Project manage and disseminate the internal insight document on the latest trends on TV viewing, industry revenues, advertising and content spend 
- Provide written analysis of key market developments to help inform Ofcom’s understanding the TV industry 
- Assist with our annual TV data collection including assessing whether the current data we collect is fit-for-purpose and reflects the current TV landscape 

Skills, knowledge and experience 

- A natural curiosity and enthusiasm for the media industry 
- Good attention to detail and the patience and commitment to ensure work is accurate 
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex results and issues clearly in writing and orally 
- Excellent organisational skills, with ability to manage and prioritise a range of work, projects and ad hoc requests 

Desirable Skills / Experience 

- Previous experience in the communications industry, particularly in TV 

Qualifications 

- Degree or equivalent qualification 

Competences 

- Acts as a point of contact for the team on specific issues in own area of expertise 
- Collates information from a range of sources when creating a draft 
- Produces succinct, logical drafts of documents 
- Develops a logical process of research to analyse and understand key issues
