Company description:

EDF Energy is a core part of the EDF Group, one of the largest energy companies in Europe with key business operations in the UK, France, Italy and Belgium. We're the UK's largest producer of low-carbon electricity, the biggest supplier of electricity by volume in Great Britain, the largest supplier to British businesses and we employ more than 13,000 people. We operate nuclear, coal and gas power stations, wind farms, and combined heat & power plants. We have a focus on safe, dependable energy generation and an ethos of service excellence. We are playing a leading role in new nuclear build in the UK to secure a bright future for the combined business and its employees.

Job description:

Part of EDF Energy's Research & Development centre, the Digital Innovation team is young, dynamic and ultra-curious.

We are currently 12 people: developers, data scientists and innovation experts.

Our job is to not only keep a beady eye on the most cutting-edge digital technologies, but also to turn those technologies into proof of concepts that show how they could bring value to the business. As such, we operate like an in-house startup, but one that works on virtual and augmented reality, data science and visualisation, artificial intelligence, blockchain, bots, connected home and IoT... all wrapped in a beautiful layer of great user experience and visual design.

You'll be equipped with a MacBook Pro, Slack, Google Apps, access to your own favourite tools (you choose), a collaborative open environment and an endless supply of new ideas and technologies. We are constantly learning: monthly half-day skill sharing sessions are supplemented with hack days, talks from academic researchers and meetups.

There might be opportunities to visit EDF innovation centres for various events in the UK and abroad (recent ones include hackathons in Paris and Beijing).

?????You will design great, innovative user experiences that bring to life the cutting-edge innovations developed by the team.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead the design element of innovative proof-of-concepts (POCs) that utilise the latest digital technologies to bring value to the business.

  • Support the Digital Innovation team and the R&D UK Centre with a wide variety of design tasks, including illustration, print and graphic design, as well as UI design for web, mobile and immersive (AR/VR) applications.

  • Create Invision and Sketch prototypes

  • Build great front end web applications.

  • Support hackathons with rapid prototyping and where necessary front end development.

  • You will gain a great portfolio of digital projects covering a wide spectrum of technologies and applications.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

We are ideally looking for someone who is able to demonstrate the following:

  • Passion for creating amazing, eye-catching designs, whether that's for websites, apps or VR/AR.

  • Formal training in either graphic design or illustration.

  • Solid grounding in HTML5 / CSS3 and be familiar with common front-end tools (Bootstrap, SVG, Sass...) and be capable of turning your beautiful designs into clean, manageable and readable code.

  • In-depth knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop, and good skills in the rest of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.

  • A personal interest in a specific field such as digital, 3D design or animation would be a huge benefit.

  • Awareness of the latest trends and good practises in digital design.

  • A burning desire to progress your graphical skills and to learn about the latest digital innovations.

  • Experience developing front end web applications.

  • Out-of-the-box thinking and an open mind to learn about the energy industry.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects originating from multiple people within and outside the team.

  • Ability to create designs based on EDF Energy brand guidelines.

  • Strong attention to detail. Be pixel perfect

  • Must be able to learn, understand, and adapt to using new technologies and approaches to design and development.

  • Most importantly: an overall enthusiasm for, and interest in, experiencing and creating the digital future!

Bonus points:

  • Exceptional skills and/or interest in a particular area within the wide field of design (illustration, data visualisation, UX, motion, web or graphic design, etc). We would aim to find opportunities for you to further expand those skills.

  • Experience with Sketch and InVision or other similar tools.
