Our client is the largest recycler of Steel in the UK and through using Electric Arc Steelmaking, Vacuum Induction Melting, Mill processing and their dedicated service centres, they are able to produce and supply a variety of high-value precision-engineered products for Aerospace, Oil and Gas, Industrial Engineering, Bar and Narrow Strip.
About the role:
Our client is currently looking for a Process Metallurgist to work within their Steel and Bar business. The role will require you to provide a technical, metallurgical and quality assurance service. This will include maintaining processing standards, to internal and external customer ordered requirements, ensuring that the product is fit for purpose and to customer satisfaction.
In addition to this continuous improvement is fundamental to the role, in particular root cause analysis; and corrective actions will be routinely applied to drive business excellence in operational, technical and yield initiatives.
You will be responsible for the management of a Process Metallurgical team and will be expected to achieve the desired product quality via the most cost effective routes. Although, areas of responsibility will be within a specific area, however, this role is also flexible with an expectation that other equivalent position(s) across Rotherham may be covered as business needs arise
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Management of the Day Process Metallurgists Shift QC / NDT Team where applicable.
- To provide a technical and metallurgical service and identify areas for improvement on process routes and yields.
- Lead and coordinate investigations into major internal and external issues.
- Take ownership of an extensive QA system, focussed on a variety of external standards, including ISO 9100, TS 16949,
- Responsibility for FMEA’s, Control Plans, MSA’s, CAR’s and SPC
- Conduct internal and external audits.
- To manage and report on the various key performance indicators within the area.
- Facilitate quality aspects relating to Daily Management and ensure that this is maintained within the Trio management system.
- To identify and progress areas of improvement from analysis data trends. This requires a structured and systematic approach to problem solving.
- Work closely with Plant Manager, Operations Manager, Quality Manager, Process Managers and Lead Engineers to develop and implement improvement plans.
- Liaise across Departments and Functions to ensure that customer ordered requirements are met to standard, at the lowest cost. (Contract of Supply management is a key aspect of this).
To be successful within this role you will ideally have:
- The jobholder will be educated to degree level or equivalent in Metallurgy / Materials with relevant work experience gained within a steel works environment.
- Knowledge of QA principals and problem solving techniques is required as well as an awareness of the key processes of the department.
- Must be a strong communicator and able to communicate with a variety of stakeholders from all levels.
- The jobholder must be capable of resolving problems of a quality and process nature, both on site and with customers.
- You will have a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of Metallurgy and of the melting, casting, secondary rolling and finishing operations. A working knowledge of bright drawing and forging operations of steel grades and their designations is required.
