The Department for Education is responsible for education, children's services, higher and further education policy, apprenticeships and wider skills in England, and equalities. Operations Group is responsible for the main corporate functions of the department including: analysis, commercial, data, estates and security, finance, human resources, international education, Operations and Delivery Unit, technology and the governance and relationship standards with the DfE's public bodies. Its role is to support the business to deliver ministerial priorities by ensuring that:
• The department is sufficiently resourced (people, data / information, finance, IT) and organised right to deliver its business objectives; and
• Efficient and effective systems and processes, driven by customer needs, underpin our services.
Commercial Directorate
• The purpose of the commercial function within the Department for Education is to ensure that all commercial and procurement activity supports the Department's priorities and delivers outstanding value for money. It also exists to proactively develop commercial solutions for the wider education sector that reduce waste in procurement and release funds for the front line.
• The commercial function manages a large and diverse set of activities across the department with many high profile and complex contracts and grants as well as running a highly successful Risk Protection Arrangement for academies and a schools buying strategy.
• Commercial Directorate is currently engaged in an exciting growth and transformation programme, with the aim of becoming one of the best commercial teams in Government.
The Role:
The successful applicants must have experience of working in a fast-paced environment for an essential priority activity with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and can communicate in a non-technical manner.
We are looking for candidates who are tenacious, have an eye for detail, are flexible and adaptable when responding to changing priorities and who have excellent time management skills.
The successful applicants will get strategic insight and have exposure to the wider organisation.
These are demanding but rewarding posts and you will join a highly capable, dynamic and supportive team delivering business transformation.
Key Responsibilities:
Each role will have different responsibilities and your precise work will vary over time, but could include:
• Support the transition of commercial systems ensuring that the commercial end to end process can be captured electronically to facilitate detailed reporting.
• Be immersed in the scoping of the requirements, procurement, design development, testing and roll out of the commercial system.
• Develop and produce guidance and user training aids and deliver user training sessions to ensure an effective rollout.
• Take responsibility for the reporting of Commercial data to the Commercial Operations Board.
• Lead and be responsible for the progress and reporting of the Commercial Operating Standards
• Input into the improvements required to meet the Commercial Operating Standards
• Being actively involved in the reporting of commercial activities to Ministers
• Supporting the Savings and Benefits Realisation (BR) Manager to identify and report on savings and BR
• Deliver bespoke and routine reports to Senior Commercial Business Partners and Business areas

• Working knowledge and detailed understanding of commercial systems and processes.
• Experience of commercial assurance and governance.
