Morrison Utility Services are looking to recruit Water Network Construction Apprentices. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain recognised and accredited qualifications whilst you earn and gain a vast amount of experience within a highly respected company. The role will involve constructing and maintaining the water networks in and around the London area to assist Thames Water in providing a top quality water service for the people of London.

Thames Water Agility Alliance, a joint venture formed between Morrison Utility Services and J Murphy and Sons is working as part of the Thames Water Alliance to deliver essential, planned and reactive operational water networks support that includes repair, maintenance, developer services and all associated activities that will drive down leakage and reduce interruptions to supply for customers across the Thames Water region.

Principal Accountabilities: As part of this apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to learn to carry out the following core activities:
• By contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work environment you will understand the importance of consistently working tidily and efficiently while carrying out duties, by maintaining an orderly work area and looking after tools and equipment.
• You will carry out your duties by operating powered tools and equipment and you will learn to operate them in a safe and effective manner.
• Many of your activities will be working in around the public highway and you will learn how to maintain your own safety, your colleagues and that of the general public.
• Locating and avoiding service apparatus and substructures
• Excavating holes and trenches in ground and pavement structures
• Cutting, sawing and lifting various road and pavement surfaces, excavating and supporting trenches as well as supporting other utility services crossing the excavation.
• Reinstating excavations and pavement surfaces Specific activities relating to water mains and service laying:
Installing water services and ancillary structures, you will prepare for and instal water mains or services in a variety of materials and using a variety of jointing techniques. These installations will all be carried out with due regard to hygienic best practices. You will also learn how to repair faults and other damage to water mains and services. Now there is a lot to take into consideration if you want to join Morrison Utility Services as a Water Network Construction Apprentice so ensure you read the following before applying.
• The water industry is potentially very dangerous so the safety of Apprentices, their work colleagues and the public are of the upmost importance - you will be trained up to consider and be wary of health hazards whilst on the job
• We give you PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure you are as safe as you can be when doing the job
• This is a physically demanding job that involves bending, lifting and manual handling so a basic level of fitness is important to be able to conduct the job efficiently and to the best of your ability
• If you suffer with claustrophobia should be mindful that some of these job roles may involve working in confined spaces
• Conditions may be wet, dirty and smelly, however Apprentices would be provided with appropriate PPE to ensure you are warm and dry at all times
• Many of these jobs involve working outdoors, so Apprentices should be prepared to work in any kind of weather and after completion to be involved in stand-by and call out duties
• Some of these job roles involve travelling as Apprentices may work at different sites so you will need to have your own personal transport to get to work or site each day Some of these job roles involve dealing with the general public on a day-to-day basis so:
• Apprentices should be presentable and have a polite and courteous manner, remember as part of this alliance you are representing Thames Water and Morrison Utility Services, we want everyone that interacts with you to walk away with a high opinion of both you and the organisations you represent.
• The ability to work as part of a team and independently is important.
• Apprentices need to be enthusiastic with a positive attitude and a keen interest in the water industry.

Apprentices will need to have good practical skills for handling tools and instruments and be prepared for some hard work. These are very skilled jobs and some aspects require significant amounts of concentration. In order to work on the network successful candidates will be required to work in all weathers. You must be very safety conscious and have a very responsible attitude to work, working in accordance with company health and safety procedures at all times.

Suitable applicants will be new to the water industry and have recently achieved GCSE's or equivalent Grades A to E (9 to 2) in English and Maths.
Successful applicants who have not gained the pre requisite qualifications will be required to undertake Functional Skills Level 1 as part of their apprenticeship programme.
No previous work experience required.

Candidates will be offered full-time employment on completion of the apprenticeship with Morrison Utility Services who also carry out similar work for other water companies in the UK.

Applicants will be working in the South London Area and must have a full UK driving licence and their own transport to be able to travel daily to site or the operational depot. At interview stage you will be required to provide proof of right to work in the UK. Apprentices will also be on block release during their training at Utility & Construction Training Ltd (UCT) Carrington, Manchester acquiring the basic knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to work productively on the network. The remainder of your time will be spent under supervision in and around the London area working on our contract with Thames Water. The cost of travel to and from the training centre in Manchester will be provided by the company as well as the provision of accommodation whilst staying away. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment for this opportunity due to health and safety reasons Application Process Please note there will be an Assessment Centre for this opportunity which will be taking place at the Agility Alliance Offices on 11th and 12th December.
