Background of developmentplus:

Lincoln Community Development Worker Project (trading as developmentplus) is a community development organisation which has worked across the County of Lincolnshire since 1997.  We are a registered charity and company limited by guarantee.  We work alongside people in their community facilitating their involvement in decisions that affect their lives, supporting them to identify and develop initiatives that they feel will improve their quality of life socially, environmentally, economically and through learning.

Project Overview:

Funded by the Big Lottery's Reaching Communities Fund, "Better Together" is a collaboration project bringing together developmentplus, Abbey Access Training and Green Synergy, 3 charities based in Lincoln.  It will support, enable and empower people who are experiencing mental health conditions to come together to improve their personal health and wellbeing and overcome barriers to move forward in their lives.  The project will fulfil this aim by offering participants a tailor made, supportive, flexible programme of mentoring, coaching, therapeutic activities, volunteering, training, work experience and support into employment.

Developmentplus will oversee the coaching and mentoring element of the programme, once enrolled on the project each beneficiary will be assigned a developmentplus coach who will provide 1-1 support throughout their project journey. The coaches will use developmentplus’ 'STEPS' programme to encourage and support beneficiaries to: identify personal barriers, break cycles of limiting behaviour, face fears and anxieties, gain control, feel happy, be motivated, set goals and take positive action.

During their first month, project beneficiaries will also get the opportunity to have a go at group activities and practical taster sessions in catering and customer service (with AAT) and horticulture and countryside management (with GS).  At the end of the taster period project staff and beneficiaries will jointly decide which practical activities the beneficiary would like to continue to take part in. Beneficiaries will complete an action plan with their project coach and will continue to see them for 1-1 support and mentoring throughout the rest of their time on the project.
