The development management service is responsible for handling all the planning applications received by the council. Wiltshire receives well over 5,000 planning applications each year, making it the third largest planning authority in the country.

About the role

As a Senior Planning Officer, you will provide professional planning advice to members and customers to ensure that the demands and priorities of the service are met.

You will focus on major and complex applications, including listed buildings, by looking at recommendations made by planning officers and ensuring this is in accordance with the council's development plan, scheme of delegation and national planning policy. You will make decisions and/or recommendations for delegation or determination by committee, within the performance target timetables.

You will support and assist the team leaders in the provision of an efficient and effective development management service by mentoring development management officers in which you will monitor and set directions of their workload.

About you

You will have a degree in planning, conservation or related discipline and higher qualification accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) or Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) along with recent practical experience in planning.

You will need extensive knowledge of planning/listed building/conservation practice, procedures, legislation, and any advice and policy reports. As well as having previous experience of preparing and interpreting appeal statements and representing the council at planning inquiries.

You will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of planning policy at national and local level. Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with different audiences will also be important in taking forward this role.
